    Thanks to a generous grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Mercy Hospitals, women in the Highland County area have the opportunity to receive a mammogram at no cost. On Friday, Dec. 2, Mercy Hospital's mobile unit will provide mammogram screenings at the Highland County Health Department for women ages 40 and older.

  • HEAP Winter Crisis Program begins; heating assistance available to eligible households
    With the frigid weather approaching, the Ohio Department of Development prepares to protect Ohioans for another winter season with the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Winter Crisis Program. The program assists qualified low-income and elderly Ohioans with winter heating costs, beginning November 1, 2011 and running through March 31, 2012.

    As we arrived at the "packing facility" an elderly couple was unloading tidy packages of beef from a stainless steel cart into several plastic coolers in the back of their truck. We went inside. A young girl stood behind the counter. She looked no more than 16. She read down a form and checked off the cuts of meat that we would like, pork chops, ribs, loin, bacon, smoked ham, and, of course, sausage. I noticed that she was missing about an inch from the end of one of her fingers. A hazard of the trade, I supposed.
