Many Highland County citizens are members of the Senior Citizens Center and are enjoying its many benefits. The center is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 1970 and is supported solely by membership dues, fundraising activities and private donations. It receives no funding from any government entity.
Services are rendered on a nondiscriminatory basis, and the center is handicap-accessible.
Although it's now more than 40 years old, there are still many who are unaware of the many free services and activities provided to its members.
These are some of the opportunities, events and services available at the center:
• Art and ceramic classes;
• Cards, pool and euchre;
• Chair volleyball;
• Chorus, Trail Blazer Band and Sunshine Band;
• Line dancing;
• Bowling;
• Bingo;
• Lunch served Monday-Friday, monthly birthday dinners and home-delivered meals;
• Notary service;
• Blood pressure service;
• Passport program;
• Annual flea market, Halloween Party, Thanksgiving dinner, Election Day dinner, Christmas Bazaar and Christmas Day dinner;
• Quilting group;
• Special events;
• Fellowship, meeting new friends and opportunities for sharing;
• Volunteering;
• Exercise.
Since the organization's beginning, organized tours have been available to each member. Trips in 2012 will include a one-day trip to Anderson, Ind.; a mystery trip June 19-22; a New Orleans trip, July 15-21; a Branson, Mo. trip, Aug. 6-11; and an East Coast (and more) trip Sept. 14-24.
The center hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Membership is open to anyone 50 years of age and older with dues of $20 per person payable for the calendar year Jan. 1 - Dec. 31. All of the above benefits are available to members.
Many individuals and businesses support the Senior Citizens Center, not only through membership, but with contributions to this important service to Highland County Citizens.
