  • Annual meeting of Adena's Board of Trustees

    CHILLICOTHE – The Adena Health System Board of Trustees held its annual meeting Sunday, April 17, in the PACCAR Medical Education Center, which included presentations from top executives about the state of the system.
      The yearly event began on a somber note as board members honored the memory of Cathy Evanoff, a former board member who died recently. She served on the board from 1982 to 1990 and was a past board chair.
  • Farm program signup under way
    Highland County Farmers have until June 1 to enroll their farms into the 2011 Direct and Counter Cyclical Payment Program (DCP) according to Jim Patton, director of the Highland County Farm Service Agency (FSA).
  • Greenfield now listed as a village, following report on 2010 census; recount underway
    Secretary of State Jon Husted has released an official roster of cities and villages throughout the state following a review of the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau Report. In total, Ohio will have 247 cities and 691 villages. Among the changes following the 2010 census, Greenfield will be reclassified as a village, the secretary's office said.

  • CVB hires Lambert as executive director UPDATED
    The Highland County Convention and Visitor's Bureau has hired Hillsboro resident Bob Lambert as its new executive director.
      Along with Lambert, the bureau's board also hired John Michael McGuire as a new website and technical assistant.
  • Hope files suit against city for $2.6 million; city gives notice to demolish Parker Hotel
    The city of Hillsboro has given notice to Jack Hope, owner of the Parker Hotel in Hillsboro, that the building will be demolished if specific repairs are not made to the structure. Hope has filed a civil suit in Highland County Common Pleas Court to prevent the city from following through and has asked the court grant him damages in the amount of $2.6 million.
      The actions are similar to previous attempts the city has made to have the building demolished, and Hope has made similar court filings to prevent the city's actions.
  • Donley celebrates retirement

    Wearing the same dress that she wore as she was sworn into office 25 years ago, Paulette Donley celebrated her last day as Highland County Clerk of Courts on Friday. 

    The clerk's staff threw her a retirement party at the Highland County Courthouse, which was attended by current and former courthouse staff members, county elected officials, attorneys and community members.

  • Ohio attorney general issues certification of Senate Bill 5 referendum summary language
    Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine today issued certification of the summary language for one of the two referenda seeking the repeal of Senate Bill 5. The certification was issued today in a letter delivered to Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted.

    On Thursday, April 14, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) introduced legislation that moves the home of Col. Charles Young, a National Historic Landmark, towards inclusion in the National Parks System.
  • Rosenberger presents awards to Lynchburg PD
    Ohio State Rep. Cliff Rosenberger recently presented awards to Lynchburg Police Chief Brandon Wooton, Sgt. Dustin Malone and the LPD K9 unit, Chica. On March 17, Wooton, Malone and Chica were invited to the Ohio State Capitol and were presented with the awards in recognition of their efforts in establishing the K9 program and a recent drug arrest.

    The Hamer Township trustees have called a special meeting for the purpose of discussing legal strategy as it pertains to fire and EMS contracts at 6:30 p.m. Monday April 18 at Liberty Township House in Hillsboro.
  • Gilbert Stonerock convicted on unlawful sexual conduct; sentence to maximum 5 years
    A former Greenfield man was convicted on a charge of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor Thursday during a jury trial in Highland County Common Pleas Court, and was sentenced to the maximum of five years in prison.
     The jury of six men and six women deliberated for less than 45 minutes before returning the guilty verdict against Gilbert Stonerock, 35, who now lives in Washington C.H.

    The earsplitting crunch of metal and shattering windshields broke the silence of a quiet Highland County Fairgrounds Thursday morning, followed by screams for help and the wail of sirens in the distance. As the "victims" tried in vain to free themselves from the twisted wreckage of two "crashed" vehicles, one body lay motionless in the broken glass.
