  • HCSO makes drug-related arrests

    The arrests were the result of an ongoing investigation by detectives with the Highland County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. 23 Major Crimes Taskforce, and the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office into heroin trafficking taking place in the area.
  • Patton, Dehaas appear for pretrials
    Several defendants in pending, unrelated cases appeared Tuesday before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss.
      • Kevin Dehaas, 21, of Hillsboro, appeared for a final pretrial hearing on one charge of aggravated vehicular homicide.
  • Collins to take oath of office Wednesday; Boleck hired as assistant prosecutor
    Anneka Collins, newly appointed Highland County Prosecuting Attorney, will be sworn into office Wednesday.
      Collins will take the oath of office Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Highland County Common Pleas Courtroom.
  • Commissioners, historical society team up to raise funds for courthouse refurbishment
    The Highland County Historical Society has teamed up with the Highland County Board of Commissioners to fund a refurbishment project at the Highland County Courthouse.
     The commissioners have requested estimates and specifications from Legacy Restoration and Construction out of Washington C.H.

    Lighting candles on a six-foot tall birthday "cake," the "kampers", organizers, supporters and volunteers of KAMP Dovetail celebrated 30 years of Kids And Motivated People with tears, cheers and fireworks.
      "Love makes success happen," said Doug Rudolph, the founder of KAMP Dovetail.
       Rudolph was among those who guests honored and recognized during the birthday celebration and received a standing ovation from the crowd and kampers during his introduction.

    For followers of official Festival of the Bells commemorative items, the 2011 festival will feature some items that will be highly-coveted by dedicated collectors.
      Festival entertainment chairperson Rick Williams said that prior to the Thursday night concert of Christian artist Matthew West, a special auction will be held for a set of collectible bells from the series on Hillsboro churches, and a basket signed by West.

  • Rain can't dampen spirits at KAMP Dovetail
    The rainy weather will not dampen the spirits, or cancel the ceremonies, at KAMP Dovetail Monday, when kampers past and present will kick off a week in the sun, and celebrate 30 years of Kids And Motivated People.
      SATH (Supplemental Assistance to the Handicapped) Executive Director Linda Allen said that ceremonies are still on schedule to begin at 7 p.m. at Rocky Fork Lake, when state and local elected officials, and current and former kampers will celebrate the 30 years the kamp has been proving children with special needs the opportunity to participate in summertime activities, such as camping, fishing, horseback riding and swimming.

  • Kasich announces new gaming agreement
    Gov. John R. Kasich has announced that an agreement has been reached with Penn National Gaming, Inc., in which Penn would pay Ohio $110 million over 10 years, and Ohio’s Commercial Activity Tax would be applied to Penn’s wagers minus payouts, instead of on wagers only.
  • EMS services will not be canceled
    EMS will not be canceled for 2011, and the contracted services paid for by Hamer, Jackson, Liberty, New Market, Paint, and Washington townships will be honored by the city of Hillsboro through 2011, following an agreement that was reached Friday morning.
    Following the agreement, Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Ralph Holt said in a letter to the townships' legal counsel that the city was "surprised" to learn that providing EMS through the end of the year would not result in a budget shortfall, even though Hillsboro Auditor Gary Lewis had reported that the city had the funds to continue the services, as contracted, through the end of the year.
  • Area routes undergoing preventive maintenance
    A preventive maintenance project is under way on several area routes, as contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation have undertaken preliminary operations in Adams, Brown, Highland and Jackson counties.
  • Ohio's unemployment rate holds at 8.6 percent
    Ohio's unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in May, unchanged from April, according to data released this morning by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 12,000 over the month, from the revised 5,092,200 in April to 5,104,200 in May.

  • 'We're family now...'
    In 1996, Hillsboro resident Kristy Greer donated her bone marrow to a child she was matched to in the national bone marrow donation registry. Fifteen years later, that child celebrated as a now-healthy graduate from high school.
