Commissioners proclaim National Stalking Awareness Month in Highland County

The Highland County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the month of January as National Stalking Awareness Month in Highland County.
Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeff Duncan presented the proclamation to Niki Glispie of Highland County Victim Witness, Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins, Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera and Leesburg Chief of Police Tom Tyree during the Jan. 6 board meeting.
According to Glispie, the victim witness office is teaming with local agencies, law enforcement and the criminal justice system in bringing increased awareness to victims of stalking. She said the office will be starting a social media campaign and providing safety tips for the community.

• Highland County Health Commissioner Jared Warner also informed commissioners the department has received an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grant in the amount of $297,500 to be used for repair and replacement of household sewage treatment systems.
Warner said it is a needs-based grant, and he asked commissioners and township trustees to let his office know of any issues around the county. Warner said he is also speaking with the Sinking Spring community to see if some of the grant monies can help with their issues.
Commissioners suggested Warner also speak with Frank Leone and Steve Canter at Environmental Engineering Service in Lebanon.

• Tom Davis, director of the Ross-Pickaway-Fayette-Highland Solid Waste District, updated the board on EPA regulations and compliance and special recycling projects planned for 2016.
Davis said the district is willing to assist with tire collections, electronics collections, any special collections of household hazardous material, in addition to meeting EPA goals for recycling efforts.

• Wilkin updated the board on a meeting with Jobs Ohio and the Appalachian Partnership for Economic Growth (APEG) in Chillicothe this week.

Representatives from InSite Consulting of South Carolina have been hired by the state of Ohio to work on site certifications around Ohio.
Wilkin said the county has had good success working with InSite and looks forward to continue working on the Greenfield and Leesburg industrial parks.
Resolutions
Commissioners passed resolutions by 3-0 votes as follows:
• The board appointed Angela Shepherd to serve on the Dangerous Wild Animal Response Team as media representative.
• The board passed the annual blanket travel resolution for the Highland County Engineer’s Office, which is necessary for insurance purposes.
• The board passed a similar resolution for Highland County Job and Family Services.
• The board passed the Highland County Engineer Force Account resolution.
• After a motion by Duncan and a second by Horst, the board voted to appoint Danielle Ratcliff and Karen Vanzant to the Ohio Children Trust Fund board.
Commissioners met in executive session to discuss personnel. No action was taken.
