    Last summer was on the borderline of being a drought. It was dry enough that pastures surely suffered from the lack of rain to the point that several cattle producers fed a limited amount of hay in August.

  • CHECK IT OUT: Leesburg Branch Library plans June activities
    The Leesburg Library's summer reading program - One World, Many Stories - is in full swing. We have many activities and programs planned for kids, teens and adults and we hope you will be able to join us for some or all of them.
    Our shelves are stocked with great books, so please stop in to sign up, start reading and win prizes.
      Special programs for our kids this month include:
      June 2: Bookin' with Ronald McDonald at 10:30 a.m.
      June 9: Listen to some tall tales by storyteller Frank McGarvey at 10:30 a.m.
      June 16:  Hop on a slow boat to China as Rosalind Engle shares Chinese culture & customs with us.
      June 23:  Discover the "World of Coyotes" with Carol Cartaino at 10:30 a.m.
      June 30:  Rock out with Keith Aukeman & the Reading Rocks Band at 10:30 a.m. Come and enjoy some "out of this world" music.
    There will be no story times during June, July and August. We will have a song/activity time on Thursdays (prior to our programs) in June and July from 10:15-10:30 a.m. for kids. We hope patrons of all ages will also participate in our One World Art Contest and our Flat Stanley Project this summer. Details are at the front desk or just ask one of the staff!
    Other activities this month include our Knit Together group, which meets on Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m. New members are always welcome, so feel free to come and learn or share your expertise with the others if you're an experienced knitter.
    The Leesburg Life Squad will join us the first Tuesday of each month to take blood pressures and pulses from 3:30-4:30 p.m. They will be here on Tuesday, June 7, so stop in and visit with them.
    Dawna Jo Kiesling from the Highland County Extension Office will share nutrition tips and healthy recipes for summer cooking on Thursday, June 16 from 10 a.m.-noon and on Monday, June 27 from 3-5 p.m. And our adult book group, RRR, meets on Thursday, June 16 at 1:30 p.m.
    Our teen group, SPARX, will not be meeting in June. However, teens are encouraged to sign up for summer reading and participate in the Art Contest and Flat Stanley project. Also, come and relax at our little oasis in the teen area.
    We look forward to having you stop by and visit with us this summer. Join us for a program, to check out some great summer reads or to use our Internet computers. Make the Leesburg Library part of your fun summer routine!

    The Brush and Palette Art Guild will celebrate its 54th year June 18 and 19, 1-6 p.m. at the Central Campus of Southern State Community College, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The Guild has been told this is one of the best shows in southwest Ohio.

    Jennylynn Nechole Butler, 14, of Martinsville has been chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Ohio Pageant to be held July 17-18 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus.
  • 29th annual senior citizen art show opened May 16
    The artwork of local seniors will be showcased at the Area Agency on Aging District 7's (AAA7) 29th Annual Senior Citizens Art Show that will be held May 16  20 and May 23  27 at the Esther Allen Greer Museum and Gallery, located on the campus of the University of Rio Grande in Rio Grande, Ohio.

    A Highland County woman has been named as an "unsung hero" of Appalachia.
     The purpose of the Appalachian Unsung Hero Award is to recognize "unsung heros" who have performed good deeds and built pride and self-esteem but have gone unnoticed or unrewarded for their exceptional efforts and outstanding service within the Appalachian community.

    The James Stitching Sisters seventh annual quilt day was held on April 2 at the Bethel United Methodist Church in Columbus. Four area ladies were part of the 171 volunteers who worked 1,310 hours.
