Dr. Daniel Mwanza to join CMH Medical Staff

General surgeon Dr. Daniel Mwanza is joining the medical staff of CMH Regional Health System and will begin practicing under the name Surgical Associates of Southwest Ohio, 596 W. Main St., Wilmington in September.

A general surgeon is a physician specifically trained to use various surgical procedures for the treatment of injuries and disease. A general surgeon can perform many types of surgery, including those involving internal organs such as the stomach, gallbladder and intestines, as well as procedures involving the breasts, arteries, veins and skin.

Dr. Mwanza will perform a variety of surgical procedures and treatments, including hernia, ulcer and reflux repair, gallbladder and colon removal, obesity procedures, breast and lung biopsies and varicose vein stripping.

Dr. Mwanza is currently a Fellow in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and bariatric surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis. He did a residency in general surgery at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, Far Rockaway, New York; and a postgraduate rotating internship at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Dr. Mwanza received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience in Kansas City, Mo., and his bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.

Dr. Timothy Schirmer is the other general surgeon on the CMH medical staff. CMH has a medical staff of more than 200, which includes more than 30 sub specialties.
