Ohio’s Animal Week a time to celebrate animals

The Fayette Humane Society will hold a rabies vaccination and microchip clinic for dogs and cats on Saturday, June 11, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. No appointments will be needed, but pet owners may pre-register by calling or stopping by the humane society’s adoption center which will reduce wait time. It is not required to be a resident of Fayette County.

Nature Sanctuary paint-out event June 11

Plein-air (open-air) painters will be at work Saturday, June 11, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Highlands Nature Sanctuary, 7660 Cave Road, just west of Bainbridge. Weather permitting, members of the Columbus-based Ohio Plein Air Society will work outside along the Sanctuary’s wooded, landscaped trails above the gorge of Rocky Fork Creek.

UPDATED: Highland County Sheriff's Office investigates two shootings

Two people are confirmed dead after multiple shootings in the 100 block of Trenton Street in Hillsboro. According to Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera, Timothy Harewood, 35, reportedly shot and killed his 1-year-old daughter, assaulted the child's mother and later shot and killed himself on Friday afternoon, June 3.

Ohio University community mourns loss of journalism visionary Dr. Guido Stempel

Dr. Stempel, a distinguished professor emeritus, joined the Ohio University faculty in 1965 and served as director of the School of Journalism for eight years. He was named distinguished professor in 1982. He was editor of Journalism Quarterly for 17 years. He also was a newspaper columnist for The Highland County Press and The Athens Messenger.
