    Tip leads to arrest in Beechwood armed robbery

    A Hillsboro man has been arrested in connection with the Jan. 17 armed robbery at the Beechwood Food Mart in Paint Township.
     According to the Highland County Sheriff's Office, Larry W. Smith, 41, of Carr Road, was arrested Saturday at approximately 2 p.m. after the department received a tip from an area resident.

    Jurors dismissed for weekend WATCH THE VIDEO
    On Friday, Wesley Coonrod took the stand in his own defense for the second time. He broke down in tears, put his head down on the stand, and wept as attorneys questioned him on the death of his sons.
     The case is now in the hands of the jury who will decide if he is guilty or not guilty of murdering his 3- and 4-year-old sons, Stephen and Thomas. After deliberating for more than six hours, the jury was dismissed for the weekend. They will report back to resume deliberations on Monday morning.

    Snow prompts several school delays Friday

    State rests in Coonrod trial; investigator says juveniles did not start fire WATCH THE VIDEO
    CIRCLEVILLE - The state rested Wednesday in its second presentation of a case against Wesley Coonrod, on charges of murder, and aggravated arson. During the proceedings in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court, jurors heard a state fire marshal's office investigator testify that Thomas and Stephen Coonrod did not start the fire that claimed their lives on March 7, 2010, and the victim's mother testified about learning that her sons had been killed on Thomas's fourth birthday.

     Hillsboro City Council member Rod Daniels, a Republican, took out petitions with the Highland County Board of Elections on Wednesday, and told The Highland County Press that he is seeking the office.

    Jury selection begins in second Coonrod trial
    CIRCLEVILLE - Jury selection was scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Monday in the retrial of Wesley Coonrod, on charges of murder.
     Coonrod, 42, of Greenfield, was found guilty in October of two counts of felony endangering children. He had faced aggravated murder charges with death penalty specifications stemming from a March fire in his apartment on Lafayette Street in Greenfield, during which his sons Thomas, 4, and Stephen, 3, were killed.

    Common pleas court summary shows first decrease in foreclosures in seven years
    The General Divisions of the Highland County Court of Common Pleas has released its 2010 case summary, which shows a 41 percent reduction in the number of pending cases the court has seen since 2008. While the court has seen a decrease in the number of criminal cases filed, the statistics show the court saw its first decrease in the number of foreclosures since 2003, but a 96-percent increase in all other civil cases over the past seven years.
