Tip leads to arrest in Beechwood armed robbery

A Hillsboro man has been arrested in connection with the Jan. 17 armed robbery at the Beechwood Food Mart in Paint Township.
According to the Highland County Sheriff's Office, Larry W. Smith, 41, of Carr Road, was arrested Saturday at approximately 2 p.m. after receiving a tip from an area resident.
The sheriff's office received a call from a citizen who had seen a composite of the suspect that was released by the HCSO last week, as well as a picture showing the suspect's vehicle, which was released to the media Jan. 27.
"The individual reported that the composite resembled the suspect and the suspect has been observed driving a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle," according to the HCSO. "Deputies and detectives from the HCSO followed up the information provided and led authorities to the Carr Road address where additional investigation was conducted, and Smith was ultimately arrested."
A press release from the HCSO did not state on what charges Smith was arrested.
The HCSO said it was learned through the course of the investigation that Smith was wanted by the Springfield Police Department in Clark County in connection with an armed robbery in their jurisdiction.
Smith was transported to the Highland County Justice Center where his bond was set at $50,000. He is scheduled to appear Monday, Jan. 31 at 9 a.m. for arraignment in Hillsboro Municipal Court.
The HCSO alleged that Smith could have been involved in other incidents, saying that HCSO detectives are working with the Clark County authorities to "further investigate the possible involvement of Smith in other related criminal activity."
Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward said the department appreciates the help it received from the community in investigating this case.
"This is a prime example where suspect and suspect vehicle information were made public in an effort to job someone's memory of persons they may have seen or know within their respective communities," Ward said. "We had several calls of informational tips in this case was solved with help from the general public and we appreciate their ongoing support of local law enforcement."
