The Cassner Foundation announced Wednesday their 2024 scholarship winners.

Sometimes the wait is worth it, and on Monday, the 22 years of waiting for the Fairfield Lions was well worth the celebration and excitement by the current 2024 Lions. First baseman Corbin Willey fielded a ground ball with two outs, raced to first and ran over the base with unbridled excitement — with his arms raised in victory — for a five-inning, 11-1 win over Racine Southern, giving the Lions their first district championship in baseball since 2002. 

Twenty-two years of frustration without a district championship ended on Monday afternoon for the Fairfield Lions baseball program. 

Highland County’s Talented & Gifted (TAG) students recently experienced Philadelphia, Valley Forge and Gettysburg, Pa. on their annual TAG field trip, May 2-5. 

Highland County track and field athletes excelled at the Division III Southeast District meet held May 15 and 17 at Nelsonville-York. The meet saw the Fairfield Lady Lions team earn a district runner-up trophy, while Highland County athletes also won district titles and broke records along the way.

For the third consecutive season, the Fairfield Lions are going to play in the district finals. 

Auditor of State Keith Faber is pleased to announce that the following entities received Auditor of State Awards in May for their clean audit reports.

Fairfield FFA will be hosting its first Craft Market Saturday, May 18 at Fairfield Local Schools from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 

Overcoming some rain, a bases-loaded fourth inning and a seventh inning with two runners on the bases, the Fairfield Lions overcame those obstacles and then some as they earned a third consecutive sectional championship by defeating the No. 17 seeded Eastern Eagles, 2-0 at Fairfield High School.

Fairfield’s baseball team finished in first place in Division II of the Southern Hills Athletic Conference with a SHAC record of 10-3.

Having bookend two-run innings, mixed in with a one-run inning in their Division III SE District Semifinal game on Monday at Ohio University, the Fairfield Lady Lions defeated the Northwest Lady Mohawks by a 5-3 score to move onto the district finals. 

The Fairfield Lady Lions hosted the Westfall Lady Mustangs Thursday (May 9) in a Division III sectional final game at Fairfield High School for the second consecutive year.  

The 2024 Southern Hills Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships were held at Manchester High School on Friday evening, where the Fairfield Lady Lions won the girls championship, while the Whiteoak boys placed as runners-up in the boys event. 

The Fairfield Lady Lions closed out the regular season in a big way, defeating the West Union Lady Dragons, 22-0 as Katelyn Chambliss and Caitlyn Quickle combined to pitch a perfect game, facing the minimum 15 batters in the five-inning contest at Fairfield High School.
