Indians win 3rd consecutive game; gain victories over Fairfield and Washington

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro Indians ended last week with a win on Friday against Highland County counterpart Fairfield and began this week on the road with a win over the Washington Blue Lions.

Not only have the Indians won their last three games, but they have won four of their past five games (defeated Chillicothe on April 13 and 15), and this past Friday HHS gained a non-conference win over Fairfield by a 14-7 score. 

HHS opened the home game against the Lions with a three-run first inning, but the Lions answered with five runs in the top of the second.

Hillsboro came back with three runs in the bottom of the third, then added two runs in the fourth and six more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 14-5 score. 

Fairfield continued to battle and scored two final runs in the top of the seventh inning. 

The two teams combined for 26 hits with HHS winning the hit battle with 15 and the Lions had 11. The Lions had one error, while Hillsboro had no errors. 

The Indians saw Mason Dumpert go a perfect 4-for-4 with one run and two RBI, as one of his hits was a double, and he also had one steal.

Luke Holland finished 4-for-5 with one run, two steals and five RBI. 

Zack Brown had a big game at 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, one steal, two RBI and a walk. 

The Indians also had Von Steward go 2-for-3 with two runs, one RBI and one HBP. Walker Pence was 1-for-3 with two runs, one walk, two steals and was hit by a pitch. Jack Cornele went 1-for-2 with three runs, one RBI, one walk, one HBP and three steals. 

Hillsboro also had Brody Kelch score a run, collect one RBI and force a walk, plus he added a sacrifice fly and had one steal. Brady Juillerat finished the game with one run and one RBI. The Indians also saw Brayden Oberrecht hit by a pitch. 

Pitching for the Indians was Nate Lane, who pitched 1.2 innings. Oberrecht pitched 5.1 innings, where he finished with four strikeouts.

For Fairfield, Cameron Miller was 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, one run and five RBI. Caleb Rice finished 2-for-5 with two runs, a steal and one RBI. Greyson Abbott also had a two-hit game at 2-for-2 with two runs and two walks. 

The Lions also had Zane Collins go 1-for-4 with one RBI and a hit by pitch.  Ben Miller went 1-for-3 with a steal. Van Bennington was 1-for-4. The Lions also had Anderson Humphreys score a run and walk once. Cam Caudill also scored a run and drew a walk. 

Collins pitched 3.2 innings for FHS and had three strikeouts. Zach Ahsaruk pitched 2.1 innings for FHS.

On Monday, the Hillsboro Indians defeated the Washington Blue Lions 3-2 for a Frontier Athletic Conference road victory. 

HHS scored a run in the top of the first and two more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 3-2 lead for the win. Washington’s runs came with a run in the bottom of the third and another run in the bottom of the fifth. 

HHS ended the FAC win with three runs and five errors. Washington had six hits and two errors. 

The Indians’ hits were by Brody Kelch (1-for-2, one run, one walk and two steals), Von Steward (1-for-3, one run and a double), and Carter Stingley (1-for-1, one RBI). 

HHS also had Walker Pence with one run and a steal. Zack Brown had one RBI, while teammate Luke Holland also had one RBI. 

Holland was the winning pitcher where he went all seven innings for the complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Holland threw 117 pitches, 75 for strikes. 

Hillsboro is now 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the FAC.
