    Hillsboro's James M. Davis served with elite, top-secret force

    Sgt. Davis, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Davis of Hillsboro and later of Otway in Scioto County, was inducted into military service from Highland County in May 1943 and James Davis’ World War II enlistment record confirms he enlisted in Cincinnati on May 8, 1943.

    The North Platte Canteen
    "During World War II, American soldiers from every city and walk of life rolled through North Platte, Neb. on troop trains en route to their ultimate destinations in Europe and the Pacific. This small town, wanting to offer the servicemen warmth and support, transformed its railroad depot into the North Platte Canteen. Every day of the year, every day of the war, the Canteen – staffed and funded entirely by local volunteers – was open from 5 a.m. until the last troop train of the day pulled away after midnight."

    Exercising at 80 and public service maladies
    Ben Houser is missed in many ways. It is my most humble hope that when the Southern State Community College campus opens in Mount Orab, Dr. Ben Houser's name will be prominently featured. Ben's hope would be something more subtle. That's understandable, but not acceptable.

    Job growth has a pattern
    Maybe the next president will consult with some of the more successful state governors on economic policy. Better still, maybe the next president will be one of the state governors who understands economic policy and job growth.
