  • Culvert replacement scheduled for S.R. 138

    CHILLICOTHE –  Crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Highland County Highway Maintenance Facility will undertake a culvert replacement project on state Route 138 in Paint Township, forcing a weeklong closure of the route.
  • Hillsboro residents will see a 5-percent increase to water bill
    Hillsboro residents will see a scheduled increase of 5 percent to their water bills beginning in October. 
    "Our water fund, for several years now, has been in desperate need of increases, that they have not had" Dave Shoemaker, chairperson of the Hillsboro City Council's utilities committee, told The Highland County Press. "When we established the water increases, we established them to go forward. We are going to go ahead with the 5-percent increase in water. We are going to have to also be looking at sewer (rate increases)."

    The Southern State Singers will begin rehearsals for the 2010-11 season 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, in Room 107 of Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro.
  • National POW/MIA recognition ceremony to be held Friday
    National POW/MIA Recognition Day 2010 will be observed at the Chillicothe Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center with a formal ceremony in the Building 9 auditorium beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 17, to honor and remember those who were prisoners of war (POWs) or are listed as missing in action.

  • Council meets for nearly an hour in executive session on township fire contracts
    The Hillsboro City Council met for nearly an hour in executive session Monday regarding pending contracts for fire services between the city and surrounding townships. However, no discussions regarding the matter took place in open session, and no votes were taken.
  • Hope tells council he may sue again if inspection performed WATCH THE VIDEO
    An area property owner told the Hillsboro City Council that he "has a right to sue again" if the city rules his properties located on West Main Street are structurally unsound. 
    Jack I. Hope, who owns the building in the 100 block of West Main Street, including the former Parker Hotel, said that he received a letter last week from Hillsboro and Safety Service Director Ralph Holt stating that the city would like to inspect the structures Sept. 17. 

  • Highland County Issue I Subcommittee to meet Oct. 5
    Highland County's Issue I applications for financial assistance will be discussed, rated, and ranked at a meeting of the Highland County Issue I Subcommittee on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the office of the Highland County Engineer, 138 Bowers Ave., in Hillsboro. The meeting is open to the public.

  • DeWine calls on Cordray to allow public access to state pension funds
    All five of the state's public employee pension funds denied a request from the Ohio News Organization, a collaboration of the state's largest newspapers, to provide details about service time, pay and benefits for each of their 400,000 recipients. Identifying names would have been excluded. The State Teachers Retirement System and the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund have asked the state Legislature for increased taxpayer contributions to keep the funds solvent.
  • ODOT issues notice of detour S.R. 124 and West Road for culvert replacement
    Culvert replacement on S.R. 124 near the intersection of S.R. 134 will require S.R. 124 and West Road (Township Road 132) be closed beginning Monday, September 13 for approximately two weeks.
  • Obama praises Voinovich for support on tax incentives
    U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, R-Cleveland, received praise from President Obama during his Friday press conference. Obama acknowledged the Ohio Republican's decision to vote for legislation that reportedly includes $12 billion in tax incentives for small businesses and a $30 billion investment in independent community banks to encourage lending to small businesses.
  • Georgetown man killed in High Street motorcycle crash
    A Georgetown man was killed Sunday afternoon in a motorcycle crash on North High Street near the intersection at Diamond Drive, according to the Hillsboro Police Department.
     The HPD reported that John T. Durham, 63, was traveling northbound on a 2002 Yamaha motorcycle at approximately 12:58 p.m. when Carol Reffitt, 48, of Hillsboro, was southbound on North High Street and allegedly swerved left of center to avoid striking a vehicle that had stopped in traffic in front of her.
  • Boehner will support tax relief extension for those earning less than $250,000
    Ohio Congressman John Boehner, the top Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives, said on Sunday, Sept. 12 he would support an extension of tax cuts for middle-class Americans even if tax cuts for higher income earners are permitted to expire.
  • Norm Ludwick of Sherwood Auto & Campers named Outstanding Fair Supporter
    "Norm has supported the livestock project sales for these many years and given back to the Highland County community and young people," said fair board member Dave Stratton. "His financial support of these sales is done with out fanfare and publicity. I doubt that many people in our county know the extent of Norm's support for the Highland County Junior Fair sales."
  • Hillsboro juveniles face charges of rape, in two separate cases

    Charges of rape and gross sexual imposition have been filed against a Hillsboro teenager in Highland County Juvenile Court.  Judge Kevin Greer told The Highland County Press that the charges were the result of an investigation by the Highland County Sheriff's Office. Greer said the alleged perpetrator is currently 15 years old, but the alleged events took place between September 2008 and December 2009.
