HCFFA hosts 18th annual Public Safety Day
The Highland County Firefighters Association (HCFFA), along with sponsor Kroger Corporation, hosted the 18th annual Public Safety Day on Sunday, June 8 at the Hillsboro Kroger parking lot.
This event gave the public an opportunity to meet local fire, EMS, police, EMA and other agencies that provide service to the Highland County area. Also participating were the Med-Flight helicopter, representatives from the American Red Cross and the Farm Bureau-sponsored grain bin rescue team.
Visitors were treated to several demonstrations by the local fire departments, including a live burn of a simulated living room. Once the furniture in the room was set on fire, Chief Bradley George explained to those watching how a fire doubles in size each minute. He then explained the steps taken by firefighters to size up the scene and to extinguish the blaze.
The next demonstration was to simulate the extrication and treatment of a victim in a car crash. Fire and EMS personnel demonstrated the use of the jaws of life and other equipment used to gain access to the car and the steps taken by EMS to extricate and provide care to the patient, as Chief George explained the process to observers.

Children were able to learn about how to escape a smoke-filled building in Paint Creek’s safety trailer. Hillsboro Police Department had a child fingerprinting booth, and the DARE officer from the sheriff’s office had materials for the children, as did the Fayetteville Fire Department, who had plastic fire helmets for the kids. Children also were able to spray water from a fire hose.
The event was a hands-on opportunity for children and adults alike, as children were observed climbing into the fire trucks, ambulances and even the helicopter.
The sound system and musical entertainment for the event was provide by Pokey’s DJ and Karaoke Service.
Proceeds of the food sold at the event are being donated to the Dragonfly Foundation, a nonprofit Cincinnati organization which provides assistance to children undergoing cancer treatments along with their families. For more information, visit www.thedragonflyfoundation.org.

The Highland County Firefighters Association provides training and education opportunities at no cost for member departments and performs community service projects to increase and promote safety throughout Highland and area counties through fundraising efforts including fish fries and the annual Kroger Klassic Car Show.
Member departments include: Paint Creek, Highland County North, Lynchburg, Southern Highland, Clinton Highland fire and ambulance districts; Brush Creek Township Fire Department, Marshall Township Fire Department, Bainbridge Fire Department, Brush Creek Life Squad, Fayetteville Fire Department and Peebles Fire Department; and the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.
