    Commissioners proclaim May 19 as PFC Zachary R. Gullett Day
    The Highland County Board of Commissioners proclaimed the third Saturday in May, May 19, 2012, as PFC Zachary R. Gullett Day to honor Gullett's "commitment and dedication to his county and his country through his ultimate sacrifice." A fundraising dinner will be held Saturday, May 19 from 4-7 p.m. at the Hillsboro VFW Post 9094. In addition, look for a special flier on Page 3 of the May 19 Highland County Press for a Bob Evans community fundraiser for the scholarship.

    Navy Master Chief Petty Officer Frederick A. Prindle, whose wife, Mary, is the daughter of Frances M. Veach of Hillsboro, and Emitt B. Hall, of Xenia, recently retired from active duty after 30 years of honorable service.

    Electrical malfunction to blame for fire on East South Street
    An East South Street home sustained damages to the attic area and ceilings Monday evening when a ventilation fan caught fire. No one was at home when the fire broke out, but firefighters were able to pull a dog, uninjured, from the burning home.

    Chief Powell submits resignation to council WATCH THE VIDEO
         Before approximately 70 firefighters, their family members, township trustees and Hillsboro residents, Hillsboro fire chief Jerry Powell submitted a check for $210 and his resignation to the Hillsboro city council.
         The Chief said the ongoing negotiations with area townships for EMS/ fire services, along with the Hillsboro administration's reduction of his department to 12 members, led him to submit his notice to retire Monday, during council's regular meeting held in the Hillsboro Municipal Courtroom at the Highland County Justice Center.
         Powell, who was wearing his bunker gear, said that he had just come from a fire on the south side Hillsboro, and former Hillsboro Fire and Rescue volunteers who are now working for other departments turned out on mutual aid to assist those in the "brotherhood."

    Appellate court upholds sentencing in local case
         The Fourth District Court of Appeals of the State of Ohio has upheld the decision of a local trial court, after he alleged the court erred in sentencing him to the maximum of five years, and permitted testimony from a witness not on the disclosed witness list.
     In April 2011, Gilbert Stonerock, 35, of Washington C.H., was convicted by a jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a felony of the third degree. Prior to trial, Stonerock had entered a guilty plea in the case, but withdrew it after the state and the defense were unable to agree on a sentencing recommendation.

    The 2012 Festival of The Bells will not feature a commemorative bell, after the glass manufacturer went out of business. However, other merchandise will be created to remember the 2012 festival.

        Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings has proclaimed the week of May 13-20 as "Buddy Poppy Week."
        The annual sale of Buddy Poppies by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has been officially recognized and endorsed by the governmental leaders since 1922.

    County-wide tagging event scheduled for June 2
    Highland County Junior Fair market goats, feeder calves, market lambs and market hogs will be tagged on Saturday, June 2 at the Highland County Fairgrounds. This will be the only time the above market animals will be tagged for the Highland County Fair.

    Hastings to address township Fire/EMS issue May 16 at SSCC

    In a May 11 memo to Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Chief Jerry Powell, Mayor Drew Hastings said he will address the "township Fire/EMS issue at a public briefing on May 16 at Southern State Community College at 6 p.m." Hastings goes on to say: "No on-duty firefighters are to attend the meeting and no city of Hillsboro fire-rescue vehicles or equipment are permitted at Southern State during the briefing.
