Highland resident Lorena Davis and Hillsboro resident Olivia Lander graduated as valedictorians of the largest graduating class of any school in the nation in a ceremony Sunday, June 3 at The Ohio State University in Columbus.

The personnel committee of Southern State Community College Board of Trustees will meet 3 p.m., Tuesday, June 5, 2012, in Room 421 of the college's North Campus, 1850 Davids Drive, Wilmington. The meeting will enter into executive session to discuss the compensation of public employees.

Helterbrand completes year as State FFA officer

On May 3-4 at the 2012 Ohio FFA Convention, A.J. Helterbrand of the Hillsboro FFA completed his year term as the District 9 President for the Ohio FFA Association. A.J. is the son of Tim and Sherri Helterbrand of Hillsboro.

Cassner Foundation Scholarship winners announced

The Cassner Foundation Scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Alvin B. Cassner. Six $3,500 per year scholarships are awarded annually to Highland County high school seniors. Scholarships are renewable for a four-year period upon evidence that a 2.0 average is maintained.

Lisa Klein speaks to local students

In April and May, Hillsboro High School 9th-graders read the novel "Two Girls of Gettysburg," and students met the Ohio author and former Ohio State professor Lisa Klein. Ms. Klein conducted a morning presentation in which she asked students to look at pictures and guided them through a writer’s workshop.

The Area 5 Soil and Water Conservation District held their Annual Envirothon on May 9, 2012 at Slate Run Metro Park in Pickaway County. The competition focused on forestry, soils, wildlife, aquatics and environmental issues. During the contest, teams travel to four 20 minute ecosystem stations to test their knowledge in the field.
