Last season the McClain wrestling team did something that no other Tiger wrestling team had done before … they won 12 dual matches. On Wednesday, the Tigers had two chances to match that feat, and they did.

The Greenfield Youth Wrestling team competed in the Hammer and Anvil Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 22. Six team members competed, and four of them placed in the top four.

At McClain, Coach Rick Van Matre had become known for a very deliberate, highly structured offense and a sticky defense. That was just McClain’s game, and you could expect it when the Tigers came to town. This year, however, the veteran mentor was predicting that area fans would see more of a “run-and-shoot” game pattern from the Tigers. As one area coach joked, “That means they will fast break at least once in each game.”

The McClain Lady Tigers were unable to make their shot attempts from the field, and that resulted in their fourth loss of the season Wednesday night. An inability to connect from the field led to a 45-28 defeat to the one-loss Jackson Ironladies in non-league play.
