Wildcats open season with 2 losses

MOWRYSTOWN — It wasn't the type of start the Whiteoak Wildcats were looking for to start the regular season, but two games in, the Wildcats are winless, falling in their first game 6-0 and their second game 3-2 at WHS, Saturday.
The games on Saturday, both non-league games, were part of a three-game event with WHS playing both North Central and Williamsburg.
In the first game, the Wildcats fell by the aforementioned 6-0 score, only collecting four hits from the bats of Michael Smith, Luke Taggert, Tyler Williams and Nathan Hauke, as all four batters went 1-for-3.
The North Central runs came with a three-run third, a two-run fourth and a one-run sixth.
The loss on the mound was charged to Zach Docter (0-1). Docter pitched six innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits and two walks. The junior struck out six batters.
Emery pitched the final inning, allowing two hits, no runs and striking out two.
"We faced a quality pitcher in Peterson," WHS coach Chris Veidt said. "He's going to Division II Taylor University in Indiana.
"We played a solid defensive game with no errors, as (Gage) Carraher and (Nathan) Hauke were outstanding defensively."
In their second game of the afternoon, the Wildcats fell 3-2 to Williamsburg.
WHS led 2-0 after four innings, but a three-run third by Williamsburg was enough to put them ahead for good.
For the Wildcats, Docter, Jesse Bradds and Jason Jones each went 1-for-3. Bradds added two RBIs, and Docter scored one of the two WHS runs.
Hauke (0-1) was charged with the loss, pitching six total innings. Hauke allowed three earned runs on three hits and no walks, while striking out six.
Carraher pitched the seventh inning, allowing no hits with one strikeout.
"This was a quality start for (Nathan) Hauke," Veidt said. "In the fifth, when Williamsburg scored three runs, there were three 'balls with eyes' that resulted in three runs. It was a strange inning.
"We played another sharp defensive game with zero errors, but Scott pitched a quality game for Williamsburg."
Veidt spoke about what they need to gain their first win early in the season.
"Offensively, we need to improve upon our pitch selection," he said. "We need to be more aggressive on our pitches.
"We took many pitches during both games that we normally hit well, but (Jesse) Bradds was clutch for us offensively against Williamsburg."
WHS will play again on Monday when they travel to face Paint Valley in a non-league game at PVHS.
