    SSCC committee weighs options on pending state cuts

    The finance committee of The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees met Wednesday to discuss the college's budget in response to pending state funding cuts.
      The meeting was held at Alley 21 in Hillsboro and the committee which includes board members Vickie Wilson, Paul Hall and Michelle Cimis, was joined by board chair Kay Ayres, SSCC President Kevin Boys and SSCC Vice President of Business and Finance Jim Buck.

    Greenfield council considers litigation
    The Greenfield City Council met for approximately 30 minutes in executive session during their regular meeting Tuesday to discuss "pending or imminent litigation."
     No action was taken relating to the executive session following a vote to enter back into regular session.

    Senate Bill 5 passes 17-16, moves to House
    Senate Bill 5, the controversial collective bargaining reform bill, passed during a vote Wednesday, 17-16. The Bill will now move to the Ohio House.
      Sen. Shannon Jones  (R-Springboro) introduced Senate Bill 5, which has the support of Gov. John Kasich and would eliminate collective bargaining for certain state employees - including police officers, firefighters and teachers, among others - and base future pay rates and increases on merit.

    Hillsboro council calls special meeting
    A special meeting of the Hillsboro City Council has been called for Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
     According to a release from the clerk of council, the meeting has been called by president of council Lee Koogler.
     The only item on the agenda is an executive session for the purpose of security and property.

    Levo to run for Hillsboro mayor
    A former member of the Hillsboro City Council who worked for 40 years in the banking industry is in the process of taking out petitions to run for the office of mayor of Hillsboro.
      John Levo told The Highland County Press Wednesday that he intends to run for the office as an Independent candidate.

    Court launches new website
    The Highland County Common Pleas Court has launched its website this week, and Tuesday, Judge Rocky Coss gave a demonstration for courthouse personnel and county offices that will be regularly using the site.
     The site, www.commonpleas.co.highland.oh.us, was officially launched for public use Tuesday.

    Senate committee plans revisions to SB 5, as protests continue
    A Senate committee could finalize revisions and vote on Senate Bill 5 Tuesday, March 1, as protests from union groups continue in Columbus. Senate Bill 5, introduced by Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, seeks to end certain collective bargaining rights for more than 350,000 state workers, teachers, safety forces and other public employees.

    Greg Rhoads earns berth at Nationals for Wabash College
    Former Hillsboro High School standout wrestler Greg Rhoads jumped in celebration after posting a 7-3 victory in the championship bout of the 184-pound weight class at Saturday's NCAA Division III Midwest Wrestling Regional. The victory gives Rhoads an automatic berth at the NCAA National Championship meet.

    Ohio fiscal officer charged with theft in office
    Former village fiscal officer Jackie Prine stole $37,081 of public money from the Village of Alger according to a special audit released by Auditor of State Dave Yost. Prine pleaded guilty last week in the Hardin County Common Pleas Court to collecting but not depositing utility payments over a five-year period.

    Severe storm warnings posted for southern Ohio UPDATED
    A severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch have been posted for southern Ohio, southeast Indiana and northern Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service. There are also flash flood warnings for much of the state.

    Speaker Batchelder addresses area GOP; Sullivan named Republican of the Year
    Ohio House Speaker Bill Batchelder discussed staying true to the taxpayers, while New Market resident Lowell Sullivan was named Republican of the Year Thursday during the Highland County Republican Party's annual Lincoln Day Dinner.
     The event, held at the First United Methodist Church in Hillsboro, also allowed the three Republican candidates for the Hillsboro Mayor's race to address voters.

    Heavy rains cause school delay; several reports of high water
    Heavy rains through the late evening Thursday and early morning Friday have led to one local school delay and several reports of high water. The Lynchburg-Clay Schools were on a one-hour delay due to areas of high water.
