Heartland hosts 7th annual chili challenge

Sixteen chili recipes – including seven "mild" and nine "hot" recipes – were entered in the seventh annual chili challenge Feb. 23, hosted by Heartland of Hillsboro.
After a tie-breaking taste-off for the "hot" category, Vickie Kirk came out victorious for the second year in a row, while Darlene Roades took first in the "mild" division.
Terry Mikkelsen and John Losey followed with second place titles; Losey's recipes in the "hot" category, with Mikkelson coming in second in the "mild" category.
Kirk, Roades, Mikkelsen and Losey were each presented a gift card from NCB for their winning chili recipes.
The first place winners' chili will be available to taste during the chili supper and dessert auction, Thursday, March 3 from 5-7 p.m. at the Old Ponderosa Banquet Center in Hillsboro. Tickets ($5 for adults, $3 for children under 10) are available at the following sponsors locations: Heartland of Hillsboro, Gibbs Associates Insurance, The Highland County Press, Kroger, NCB, Hillsboro Ponderosa Steak House, Wilkin-Wilkin Insurance and Buckeye Country 105.5 FM, or may be purchased at the door.
All proceeds go to the Highland County Society for Children and Adults telethon. This year's telethon is set for 6-10 p.m., Wednesday, March 30 at U.S. Bank in Hillsboro and McClain High School in Greenfield.
This year's chili challenge judges included: Dick Zink, Nick Thompson, Sharon Hughes and Mike Rector tasting the "mild" submissions, and across the room at the "hot" table were Donnie Barreras, Terry Mull, Suzanne Hopkins, Judge David McKenna and Damon Scott.
Joanna Mahan, with WVNU Radio, was also on hand with a live broadcast of the event to help promote ticket sales for the upcoming chili supper and dessert auction.
Heartland's Debbie Rhude thanked all participants, judges and sponsors of the event and again reminded everyone "how important it is to purchase a ticket."[[In-content Ad]]
