A severe thunderstorm warning and a tornado watch have been posted for southern Ohio, southeast Indiana and northern Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service.
A tornado warning was posted early Monday morning for parts of Champaign County in west-central Ohio.
There are also flash flood warnings for much of the state.
The tornado watch is in effect until 9 a.m. for southern Ohio. In Hillsboro, severe weather warning sirens were activated before 6 a.m.
State Route. 753 in Highland County had been closed near the 12.8-mile marker and its intersection with Snake Road (north of U.S. 50) due to a downed tree, and S.R. 28 was closed at the 7.68-mile marker and Stafford Road, near the eastern corporation limit of Leesburg, due to downed power lines. At approximately 1:20 p.m., ODOT announced that S.R. 28 was open, but that traffic on S.R. 753 was restricted, "Due to a power pole that is leaning. Until such time that the local utility company can restore the pole, traffic will be maintained by flaggers. Motorists are reminded to exercise additional caution when traveling through the area and to seek an alternate route if possible."
ODOT crews are working to clear S.R. 753, and the local power company will be working to clear the lines from S.R. 28.
Although detours have not been posted, motorists will need to seek alternate routes.
The forecast for Monday, Feb. 28 calls for showers and thunderstorms before 3 p.m., then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could be severe and produce heavy rainfall. Temperatures will fall from an early morning high in the mid-60s to around 38 by 5 p.m. Expect wind gusts as high as 33 mph.
It will be much colder Monday night, with a low around 23 and winds as high as 26 mph.
