  • Ohio sees increase in voter registration at public assistance offices

    Ohio is seeing a surge in the number of voters registering by way of public assistance programs. The increase may be related to the 2010 gubernatorial election and/or the fall midterm congressional elections.

    The Student Fun and Safety Fair (SFSF) hosted by Adena Greenfield Medical Center (AGMC) was held on August 5th, approximately 225 children and their families joined the staff of AGMC for an evening full of fun, food and prizes.
  • Hillsboro mayor vetoes city tax budget
    Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink has vetoed the city's tax budget, which was passed by a 5-2 vote during the August council meeting this week. 
    Zink told The Highland County Press Friday that "The problem with it is that it's unreasonable to reduce expenses by $912,000 to make up a $116,500 shortfall, the same thing I stated the other night. The people of Hillsboro deserve better treatment than that. I don't see why government is to squirrel money back when it is to be used on things to benefit the citizens."

  • Jackson Township man arrested after chemicals and marijuana found; two others arrested on outstanding warrants
    Rhoads was placed into custody and charged with Illegal Assembly of Chemicals used to Manufacture Methamphetamine. Lovely and Boles were taken into custody on their respective outstanding warrants. All three were transported to the Highland County Justice Center.
  • Area businesses address Turner on safety inspections
    Approximately 10 people representing Highland County area mines and quarries met with Congressman Mike Turner Thursday in the office of the Highland County commissioners regarding difficulties they have been experiencing with mine inspections.
  • Greenfield man convicted on drug charges
    A Greenfield man was convicted on drug charges in a one-day trial held this week in Highland County Common Pleas Court.
  • Rep. Turner to speak to Greenfield Rotary
    GREENFIELD – Congressman Michael R. Turner (R-Centerville) on Thursday, August 12, will speak with members of the Greenfield Rotary Club as part of a day of meetings with Greenfield residents. Rep. Turner will join the group’s regular meeting over lunch at 640 Washington Street in Greenfield.
  • Blaine pleads guilty to theft, forgery charges WATCH THE VIDEO
    Former Greenfield pastor Jim Blaine pleaded guilty to counts of forgery and aggravated theft from the Good Shepherd Church in Greenfield Wednesday in Highland County Common Pleas Court. The state of Ohio has recommended he be sentenced to three years in prison and that he make full restitution, which was estimated that it could be between $200,000 and $250,000.
  • Ohio Department of Development official resigns over outsourcing
    According to reports, Nadeane Howard, director of the department's energy resources division, resigned Tuesday, amid an investigation into federal stimulus money that went to an overseas call center. She had served in the position since December.
  • Crash claims life of 12-year-old boy
    The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Wilmington Post, is currently investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash that occurred in Clinton County on state route 350 at Farmers Road in Washington Township.

  • Committee waits to recommend 10-percent cut to GF
    The finance committee of the Hillsboro City Council did not present a recommendation to cut 10 percent from the city's general fund to a full council Monday night because, according to committee members, work is still needed on the legislation.
  • City employee questions auditor on budget numbers WATCH THE VIDEO
    A city employee said she was just asking the Hillsboro auditor for answers when she alleged there were "$600,000 unaccounted for" in budget figures, while he said she was trying to play a game of "gotcha" during a tax budget hearing held Monday, prior to the start of the Hillsboro City Council meeting.

  • Report says Brown Publishing 'inflated' circulation numbers
    A report in the Dayton Daily News this week alleges Brown Publishing inflated some of its circulation numbers before filing for bankruptcy earlier this year. The Aug. 7 DDN report says Brown overstated "the numbers to advertisers by as much as 18 percent, according to an internal document obtained by the Dayton Daily News and Springfield News-Sun.
