City announces layoffs; projected deficit now around $650,000

Three Hillsboro City employees have been informed their jobs will be eliminated, according to Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink, to help offset a projected $730,000 deficit by the end of 2011. Zink said additional work needs to be done to balance the city's budget, and would not rule out proposing a tax increase.

Commission OKs new security system

Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward met with commissioners Wednesday regarding the outdated video recording system at the Highland County Justice Center. The security recording system is 9 years old and it is “starting to falter,” Ward told commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Gary Heaton. Ward explained that the security cameras operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and several cameras are no longer working.
