    By most folks’ standards, summer vacation season is officially under way. The graduations have taken place and classes have ended for colleges that use the quarter system. 4-H camps as well as other camps are beginning. County fairs will begin later this month.
  • Faul joins Teach for America Corps
    Jade Faul, former resident of Hillsboro, is about to embark on a new adventure. She has completed three levels of higher education. She started out as a Post Secondary Enrollment Option student at Southern State Community College, earning an associate’s degree along with her high school diploma.
  • Seniors plan La Comedia trip on Sept. 16
    La Comedia Trip planned
        Join us on Thursday, Sept. 16 for a trip to Springboro’s famous La Comedia Dinner Theatre and a matinee performance of the hilarious comedy “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.” Our seats are the best in the house, floor level, center section, and La Comedia’s buffet is the finest in the area. The cost is $60 per person, and includes transportation, lunch  and taxes. Your luxurious motorcoach will leave the center at 9:30 a.m. Stop by the center or call 393-4745 to make your reservation. Remember, you must be a center member (or guest of a member) to travel with us.
  • Hillsboro Emblem Club sends coupons to U.S. Marines
    The Hillsboro Emblem Club met on Tuesday, June 8 at the Elks Lodge, with 12 members present.
  • Kickoff event July 1 for 2010 Operation Christmas Child
    A countdown event for the 2010 Operation Christmas Child efforts in Highland and surrounding counties will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 1 at the Hillsboro First United Methodist Church at 133 E. Walnut St.
  • W3s help in city beautification
    Members of the W3s, which stands for Ward 3 of the city of Hillsboro, volunteered to clean up an area of Johnson Street this week. The group worked to pull weeds, pick up litter and debris, sweep sidewalks and mow the grass in the city right of way. Members of the group included Hillsboro Ward 3 City Council member Mary Brown Turner, Josh Fox, Robert Watterly,Lolita Williams, Jeffrey Fox and Connie Fox

    Summer Reading Adventure is going GREAT! Our theme this summer is "Make a Splash - Read." We have been having a great time in our Library Camp and Storytimes with this theme. We have 437 signed up at this time for our summer reading adventure, and it's not too late.

    There will be clothing construction help sessions for 4-H members on Wednesday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, and Wednesday, July 7, 2010, from 7-9 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the Highland County Administration Building.

    Adena Health System is celebrating National Cancer Survivors Day beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday with a free all-you-care-you-eat picnic for cancer survivors and guests at the VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe.
  • SATH Car and Bike Show benefit to be held at Festival of the Bells July 3
    The Festival of the Bells is proud to announce its Annual Car and Bike Show on Saturday, July 3, 2010. The car and bike show will be held in the old Hillsboro High School parking lot next to the Scott House. All proceeds will benefit SATH (Supplementary Assistance to the Handicapped).

    On Wednesday, June 23 at 7 p.m., SATH's KAMP Dovetail Space Camp will host its 3rd Annual Carnival and "Out of This World" Auction at Rocky Fork State Park campground. The auction is open to the public, and all are invited to attend.

    Orland and Mae Fern Miller of Buford will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on July 3. The couple will be having a celebration to commemorate the occasion at Pricetown Church of Christ from 2-4 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall in Pricetown on their anniversary.

  • Magic Waters presents murder mystery
    It's time for Magic Waters Theatre's murder mystery, "Sherlock Holmes' American Cousin in the Adventure of the Walking Corpse." The play opens Friday, June 18, with subsequent performances on June 19, 20, 25, 26, 27, and July 9, 10, and 11.
  • Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15
    The Senate Special Committee on Aging estimates that there may be as many as 5 million elder abuse victims each year in the United States. And while this number is quite staggering, only around 16 percent of these abusive situations are referred for help. Recently, the Ohio Senate passed a Senate Bill designating June 15 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day statewide. The Area Agency on Aging District 7, which covers 10 counties in Ohio, including Adams, Brown, Gallia, Highland, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto and Vinton, encourages the community to be aware and educated about elder abuse. If you or someone you know is the victim of abuse, it is important to report it to the appropriate authorities.
