    Community members speak out on behalf of suspended teacher WATCH THE VIDEO

    Former students and family members of a Hillsboro Middle School teacher who has been placed on paid leave due to a pending investigation spoke out during a meeting of the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education, asking for answers and that he be allowed to return to his job. 
    Supporters of the teacher - who is a former Hillsboro High School athletics coach - spoke of his character and dedication, with one person saying that he looks up to this teacher the way others look up to Dr. Martin Luther King. School district representatives did not publicly address the audience members but did confirm there is an ongoing investigation into the teacher's alleged actions.

    AEP says inaccurate meter reading led to fair board's $15,000 bill
    Three members of the Highland County Fair Board expressed serious concerns with the board's most recent AEP electric bill during the Feb. 15 meeting of the Highland County Board of Commissioners. AEP has subsequently said that a meter error led to the 500-percent increase in the bill.
    Following the commissioners meeting, the fair board members had a conference call with AEP representatives, who said the $15,000 bill was the result of an inaccurate meter reading.

    Daniels looks forward to leading Agriculture Department
    Gov. John R. Kasich has announced the appointment of Sen. David Daniels (R-Greenfield) to serve as director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA). Daniels has represented Ohio's 17th Senate District since January 2011 and will submit his resignation to the Ohio Senate on Wednesday. He is expected to be sworn in and begin his duties as ODA director on Thursday, Feb. 16.

    AEP sends sticker shock to Fair Board WATCH THE VIDEO
    Three members of the Highland County Fair Board expressed serious concerns with the board's most recent AEP electric bill during the Feb. 15 meeting of the Highland County Board of  Commissioners. Fair Board members Jon Holbrook, Nathan Cook and Mark Baldwin presented the board's most recent AEP invoice for the Highland County Fairgrounds. Previous charges had totaled $3,473.08 and were paid on Jan. 24. The latest statement, with a due date of March 2, reflects a total amount due of $15,616.48.

    Report: Gov. Kasich to appoint Dave Daniels as director of Department of Agriculture
    The Columbus Dispatch is reporting Ohio Gov. John Kasich has appointed Ohio 17th District Sen. Dave Daniels as director of the Department of Agriculture.
      Daniels did not immediately return called placed by The Highland County Press seeking comment.

    Lynchburg council transfers K9 unit to Greenfield
    The Lynchburg Village Council has voted to transfer their K-9 unit to the Greenfield Police Department.
     Council met for their regular session last week and voted 5-1 to transfer the program, with council member James Flowers voting against the transfer.

    Meth manufacturing items found at scene of fire
    Hillsboro police and firefighters are currently investigating a "suspicious" Saturday morning fire in the 100 block of South High Street in Hillsboro, where items believed to be related to the manufacture of methamphetamine were found.

    State Representative Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) was named “Legislator of the Year” by the club, “American Bikers Aimed Towards Education (ABATE)” at their annual legislative seminar.

    Council approves 2012 budget and resolution objecting to AEP rate increases
    After voting to approve the 2012 budget, the Hillsboro City Council passed a resolution officially objecting to the Ohio Public Utilities Commission for allowing "deferred costs" to be charged in 2012 to AEP customers, resulting in "unconscionable" bills, and requesting a reversal of its decisions.
     The legislation also allows for Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings to take "all legal action necessary" to make the city's position known.

    Council OKs fire/EMS contract; townships yet to give approval
    The Hillsboro City Council has voted to authorize Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings to enter into an agreement with area townships for fire and EMS coverage at $27 per person. The trustees must still consider and approve the contract before it is finalized.
     During Monday's regular February meeting, when the resolution was presented, Council President Lee Koogler asked if there were any questions or discussion on the part of council. Council did not respond, and Koogler asked for a vote.

    Lt. Col. Dr. Brad Wenstrup will be the guest speaker of the Highland County TEA Party at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13. The event will be at the Hi-TEC Center on North High Street in Hillsboro. Wenstrup is a Republican candidate for Ohio's Second Congressional District.
