The Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education held a special meeting Monday, with executive session to discuss the employment of a public employee as the only agenda item. 

The board met at 3 p.m. in the district's central office. Approximately six community members were in attendance. Board president Sam Barnhouse said that he wanted to explain that no action would be taken. 

The 2012 Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure is set to begin in Hillsboro on Saturday, June 16. GOBA is an annual one-week bicycle loop tour through Ohio, held each June.

The national debate over contraception took a new turn this week, with seven Republican attorneys general – including Ohio's Mike DeWine – suing the Obama administration over a rule that requires religious-affiliated charities, hospitals and other organizations to make birth control coverage available for employees.

The Highland County Republican Party honored former office holders Paulette Donley and Jim Grandey on Thursday, during the annual Lincoln Day Dinner.
  Donley and Grandey, former Highland County Clerk of Courts and Highland County Prosecutor, respectively, each retired in 2011. They were awarded plaques, and thanked for their years of service.

The U.S. Supreme Court has reversed a Sixth Circuit decision expanding Miranda rights for prisoners. Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine participated in the case, filing an amicus brief in support of the State of Michigan.

PUCO has ordered AEP to return its rates, as mandated by Ohio law, to levels similar to those in place in December 2011. These rates will remain in place until a new rate plan is adopted.

Booze, missing money, missing records and self-dealing has led to more than $929,850 in findings for recovery in the special audit of Dayton-area Richard Allen Academy schools released by Auditor of State Dave Yost.

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio will meet Thursday to announce how they will address the more than 1,000 complaints regarding a spike in AEP rates that have tripled the electric bills of some local businesses. 

Highland County Commissioner Tom Horst said that he, and other local representatives, wanted to have a presence at Thursday's meeting, even though they will not be permitted to make comments. 

The city of Hillsboro is negotiating with Margaret Horst to be a consultant for special projects. Most recently, Horst has served as a representative to Ohio Third District Congressman Mike Turner's office in Wilmington.
