  • Temperance crusaders march historic route through uptown Hillsboro

    Dressed in somber black lace, elaborate hats, and cross pendants on their necklaces, more than 100 people marched the streets of Hillsboro Saturday afternoon in remembrance and commemoration of the birthplace of the temperance movement.

    Singing "Onward Christian Soldiers," reciting the Lord's prayer, and yelling out phrases such as "demon liquor" members of the Highland County Historical Society paid homage to their foremothers.

  • Lynchburg man killed in 3-car crash on S.R. 138
    The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash that claimed the life of a Lynchburg man Friday.
     According to the Post, at approximately 4:03 p.m. a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Henry F. Stroop, 64, of Lynchburg, was traveling northbound on state Route 138 near Tolle Road. At that same time, a 1996 Saturn driven by Kevin F. Dehaas II, 21, of Hillsboro, and a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Mickey N. Berry, 23 of Sardinia, were traveling southbound on state Route 138.
  • Hastings submits only bid for safety building purchase
    The city of Hillsboro received and accepted one bid for $74,000 for the sale of the city's former safety building.
     Drew Hastings, who owns properties in the uptown area including the Bell's Opera House and the former Fifth Third Bank building, submitted the only bid. The bid submission included a check for 10 percent.

    Hillsboro native Kip Williams has returned to Highland County, opening the second office of his business, Kip’s Computer Consulting, LLC, on East Main Street. Williams has operated his computer consulting business from 7065 Yockey Road in Georgetown for 14 years.
  • Refinancing could save HCS more than $400,000
    After hearing a presentation from a representative from RBC Capital Markets, the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education voted to approve a resolution authorizing the district to proceed with potential refinancing of a 2001 bond issue  a move district representatives said could save taxpayers up to nearly half a million dollars.

    The Hillsboro Area Branch of the American Association of University Women, in conjunction with The Highland County Press and WVNU-FM, will hold the annual AAUW Candidates Forum Monday, Oct. 11 at Southern State Community College's Central Campus in Hillsboro.

  • Safety building bids to be opened Friday

    The pending sale on the city of Hillsboro's former safety building will advance Friday when the city opens bids for the structure's sale. Bids on the North High Street building will be accepted until 10 a.m. Sept. 17 at the mayor's office, when the bids will be opened.

    Crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation's Highland County Highway Maintenance Facility will undertake a culvert replacement project on state Route 138 in Paint Township, forcing a weeklong closure of the route.
  • Greenfield Medieval Faire Oct. 23
    The Greenfield Neighborhood Watch will be staging the Greenfield Medieval Faire on Oct. 23. The Faire will look to bring alive once again the days of knights, armor, shields, castles, swords, Robin Hood, prisoners in stocks, catapults though costumed actors and displays. The Faire will attempt to be historically authentic and recreate events in medieval England between the years 1066 and 1611.
