The budget deficit facing the city of Hillsboro in 2011 could be as high as $731,000, according to city auditor Gary Lewis. 

Lewis presented council with two sets of budget numbers which contained the recently submitted budget requests from city department heads, which shows approximately 8 percent of the city's budget will have to be cut in order for it to balance. 

Mayor Dick Zink, the Highland County Commissioners, and Sheriff Ron Ward would like to encourage local residents to complete the 2010 Census information.

Scioto County has been directed to cut $1.4 million in spending, in a recommendation by the Ohio State Auditor's Office. Auditor Mary Taylor's office suggested the spending decreases May 13 to the Scioto County Board of Commissioners. Scioto County is the only Ohio county placed in a fiscal emergency by the state.

The Hillsboro Police Department is investigating two breaking-and-entering calls from Tuesday, May 18. The department said someone had broken into the Hillsboro City Schools building at 338 W. Main St., the Scott House and the Alternative School.

For the second year in a row, the Greenfield Exempted Village Schools Board of Education voted to waive student instructional fees.
