    RFL fireworks still on for Saturday night

    The Rocky Fork Lake fireworks display will continue as scheduled Saturday evening despite Highland County being in a state of emergency.

    Commissioners declare a state of emergency
    The Highland County Board of Commissioners declared a State of Emergency Saturday due to power outages and potential water shortages. "It's a great time to be a good neighbor. For those Highland County residents who are lucky enough to have electricity, it's a good day to do a good deed, and check on your neighbors, especially if they are elderly or you know them to have health problems," Commissioner Shane Wilkin said.

    Liberty Township votes to join Paint Creek fire district

        In a 2-1 vote, the Liberty Township Trustees voted to join the Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District Friday night, despite a last-minute suggestion from the city of Hillsboro that the trustees hold off on a decision until next week.
        There was no electricity in the township building on Moore Road as the trustees held the special session.

    Liberty Township schedules special meeting on fire/EMS
        The Liberty Township Trustees have scheduled a special meeting for Friday to "discuss strategy pertaining to fire and EMS."
    
    Liberty Township Trustee Jerry Williams told The Highland County Press last week that he had met with Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District board member Bill Redenbaugh at their fire station in Greenfield regarding "fact finding."
        On Thursday, township legal counsel Highland County Prosecutor Anneka Collins said that the townships have been exploring all available options when it comes to finding a resolution for the services.

    Hensley convicted on theft charge
        A Batavia woman was found guilty of a fifth-degree felony theft charge Thursday during a bench trial before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss, after the defendant admitted on the stand that she stole jewelry from a relative's home. 
   
    Sheena Hensley was indicted in March on a fourth-degree felony theft charge. The jewelry, according to the indictment, was valued at an amount greater than $7,500 but less than $150,000. However, the court found that the value of the stolen property was approximately $1,700.

    Mayor anticipates progress, council wants more information

        Following more than two hours of executive session, members of the Hillsboro City Council say that more information is needed before they can make a decision regarding the future of Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, while the city administration say they anticipate "forward progress" by the July council meeting.     
        Council and administration members would not elaborate on what type of information or what areas are in question regarding a proposal from Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings for the city to contract with the Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District for emergency services.

    Fire district: 'We don't solicit business'
    The Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District Board of Trustees said they wanted to clear up "misunderstandings" regarding the proposed contracting situation with the city of Hillsboro, saying they have not even seen a written copy of the contract and that the city has made no official request for their services. The board said they were the ones who were approached by the city, and did not seek or campaign to persuade Hillsboro to use their services, saying, "We don't solicit business." 
    
    However, if Hillsboro is serious about wanting to contract, board members said that have the ability to provide the services.

    The village of Greenfield has been awarded a $125,000 Community Oriented Policing grant, which will allow the Greenfield Police Department to hire an additional officer to handle matters at the school campus in Greenfield.

    Council will not consider fire district contract during special session
        The Hillsboro City Council will hold its previously scheduled special meeting Wednesday evening; however, they will not consider prepared legislation that was scheduled to be presented regarding contracting for emergency services with the Paint Creek Joint EMS and Fire District.
   
        However, there is a timeline for council to consider the matter before the city's budget situation becomes "critical."

        Hillsboro Council President Lee Koogler said that he was informed by deputy law director Laura Curliss Monday afternoon that the legislation needs further review and will not be presented for its first reading on Wednesday.
