Al Conaway receives Grandmaster's Belt

Grandmaster Al Conaway, ninth-degree black belt, was recently honored by the members of his schools by being presented the rarely seen "Grandmaster's Belt."

The ninth-degree karate rank is the second-highest karate rank awarded in the world.

The ceremony was held at the main school (dojo) in Hillsboro at the school's annual carry-in dinner and awards event during the Christmas-New Year week.

The black belts Master Conaway had trained over the years had gotten together and purchased the high belt and presented it to the now-grandmaster.

When Master Conaway opened the gift, he immediately tied it on, turned to the large crowd and said, "Well, you've surprised me twice this year. Who did this?"

The grandmaster and his wife, Janet, have spent 47 years promoting the art of karate in Ohio and the Midwest. Conaway was promoted to ninth degree in September 2011.

Conaway has appointed Master Dick Crawford (eighth-degree black belt) as head instructor of the schools in Hillsboro and Lynchburg. Anyone wanting to learn the art of karate may attend classes at either school.
