State Senator David Daniels (R- Greenfield) announced today that the Ohio Senate voted to approve House Bill 153, the two-year operating budget for the state. The Senate’s proposal eliminates a historic shortfall without raising taxes on Ohioans, and also prioritizes spending in areas such as education and support services for children.

Southern State Community College Board of Trustee member Dr. Ben Houser passed away Wednesday, June 1, at Clermont Mercy Hospital, his family told The Highland County Press Thursday. He was 70.

Construction will get under way next week on state routes 286 and 763 in Brown County as contractors for the Ohio Department of Transportation mobilize crews and prepare for the closure of both routes.
Governor John R. Kasich has announced that the state will commit $750,000 in State Assistance to individuals impacted by the flash flooding that occurred May 10-11, 2011 in Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Pike, Ross, Scioto and Vinton counties.
“The rains have caused a tremendous hardship on farmers who are unable to get into the fields to plant or safely apply fertilizer and manure,” said Ted Lozier, chief of the Division of Soil & Water Resources. Lozier said that as a result of the heavy rains some manure storage facilities are near capacity. Recognizing that an overflow could have an environmental impact on waterways, the division is offering limited financial assistance to qualifying operators.

On Saturday, May 14, 42 students received Associate Degrees from Chatfield College during the college’s 40th graduation ceremony, held at the Sacred Heart Chapel on the St. Martin campus. Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr was the commencement speaker and also received an Honorary Doctorate from Chatfield College.
