Coroner's office seeks funding; outgoing prosecutor wants county to purchase used furniture

Highland County Commissioners Shane Wilkin, Tom Horst and Jeremy Shaffer received requests from Highland County Coroner Dr. Paul Terrell and outgoing Highland County Prosecutor Jim Grandey for additional funds at their May 25 board meeting.
Terrell submitted a letter to the board "to advise the commissioners of the dire need of the Highland County Coroner's Office for operating funds.
"At this time, the allotted budget has funds remaining for one more autopsy for the balance of 2011," Terrell said. "There are no funds available for transportation of a body; further, every line in the budget has been exhausted.
"I estimate an additional need in the amount of $20,000 to allow the coroner's office to continue to operate through the balance of this year."
In a separate correspondence, commissioners received the following letters from Grandey:
• "There are certain pieces of furniture which I brought with me from my Greenfield office when I first took office. These items include two desks, two end tables, hall tree, refrigerator, four side chairs and four bookshelves. Attached is an appraisal by Bruce Davis as to the value of the furnishings.
"Rather than haul them back to Greenfield, I would like the County to purchase the items from me. To save expense of hauling, etc., I would sell the items to the County for $300. Please let me know if you are inclined to purchase the items, perhaps after your meeting on the 25th, so that I can make appropriate arrangements."

To whom it may concern:
It is my opinion that the actual cash value of the desks and bookcases and tables that belong to Jim Grandey and are located in the prosecutor's office is $475.

• Grandey also wrote to the commissioners requesting they appoint Anneka Collins as interim prosecuting attorney.
"I respectfully request that your June 1, 2011 meeting that you name Anneka Collins as interim prosecuting attorney for Highland County," Grandey wrote. "Due to the nature of the office and the matters that will needed attended to prior to any appointment by the Republican Central Committee, it is imperative that there be a Prosecuting Attorney designated until the appointment is made."
Resolutions
In other action, commissioners passed the following resolutions, all by 3-0 votes:
• The authorization of a modification to the BD Developmental Disabilities fund as follows: from Salaries to eFMAP for $76,097.97.
• The authorization of an additional appropriation to the General Fund, Sheriff, as follows: from Unappropriated funds to Employee Salaries for $12,776.51. The additional funds are from the 2010 JAG LE Grant (OCJS).
• The authorization of a modification to the General Fund, Veterans Service Commission, as follows: from Transportation to Salary Employees for $31,000; from Health Insurance to PERS for $4,000; from Equipment & Repair to PERS for $340; from Relief Allowances to Worker's Compensation for $620; and from Relief Allowances to Medicare for $449.50.
• The authorization of a modification to the Certificate of Title Admin fund as follows: from Supplies to Other - Dues, Etc. for $7.26.[[In-content Ad]]
