Indians start season with 12-point road victory
The Hillsboro Indians earned a win to start the 2024-25 season by defeating the host Wilmington Hurricane 64-52 at Wilmington High School in non-conference action.
Hillsboro’s non-conference win Friday night saw the Indians trail 17-15 at the conclusion of the first quarter, and after being outscored 13-11 in the second quarter, it was the ’Cane leading 30-26 over HHS at halftime.
The Indians came out of the locker room at halftime stronger than they were in the first half, outscoring Wilmington 24-14 in the third and then 14-8 in the fourth quarter for the 12-point win.
HHS (1-0) was led in the scoring column by senior Tate Davis with 26 points, as he collected three two-point baskets, one 3-pointer and was 17-of-19 from the free-throw line. He also collected two rebounds and six assists.
Sophomore Jack Howland totaled 18 points, as he made three 3-pointers, three two-point baskets and was 3-of-4 in his free-throw attempts. Howland also finished with two rebounds and three steals.
Teammate Brayden Hunter finished the game with seven points, seven rebounds, and one assist. The Indians also had six points from Tre Captain, as he also collected one rebound, one assist, and one steal.
Xander Lake scored five points and also had nine rebounds, three assists and one steal. Mason Dumpert ended the game with four rebounds and a steal.
As a team, the Indians totaled 14 two-point baskets, five 3-pointers and were 21-of-27 from the free-throw line.
For Wilmington (0-1), they were led in scoring by Jayceon Kibler with 18 points (three 3-pointers) and Chase Fickert with 14 points (two 3-pointers). WHS finished the game with six 3-pointers, and they were 6-of-9 from the free-throw line.
WHS committed 21 turnovers, and HHS had nine turnovers.
Hillsboro is scheduled to play again Tuesday, Dec. 10 at home vs. the Waverly Tigers in a non-conference game.
