  • New GPD officer, K-9 units introduced to Greenfield council

    Greenfield Police Chief Tim Hester introduced new GPD officers to the Greenfield City Council during their regular meeting on April 5. The new officers, and new K-9 units, include: Ptl. James Leeth and K-9 "Sando", Auxiliary Officer Brendan Culberson, Auxiliary Officer Charles Mick, Auxiliary Officer Dustin Long, and Ptl. Jason Havens and K-9 "Dexi."

    COLUMBUS - State Representative Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) has announced that House Bill 65, which honors Ohioans from across the state, passed from the Ohio House of Representatives with unanimous support.

    The Columbus Dispatch reported this week that Ohio Education Association executive director Larry Wicks said "teachers and other unionized school personnel might be charged a one-time assessment of $50 to generate more than $5 million to fight Senate Bill 5."
  • Report shows EMS township reimbursements total more than department's EMS expenses
    While township officials are still reviewing options for EMS services after receiving notice that the city of Hillsboro will no longer be providing coverage after June 30, city officials have communicated that the township EMS runs provided by Hillsboro Fire and Rescue have resulted in a "substantial loss" for the city. However, according to city financial records, the city has made enough money off insurance reimbursements from the township runs to cover expenses for the department's EMS.
  • Farm Bureau applauds Ohio Congressmen, Appeals Court for reducing regulatory burdens
    Ohio Reps. Jean Schmidt and Bob Gibbs have been commended by the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF) for their sponsorship of H.R. 872, the Reducing Regulatory Burdens Act of 2011.

    According to The Chronicle of Higher Education's annual salary survey, OSU President Gordon Gee received more than $1.3 million in base pay, bonuses and deferred-compensation payouts in 2009-10, and $1.8 million when retirement and other costs of employment are included.
  • Youth-only hunt set for Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17
    Spring wild turkey hunting opens in all 88 Ohio counties on Monday, April 18, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife. The season continues through Sunday, May 15.
  • Wall Street Journal columnist: More Americans work for the government than in manufacturing, farming, fishing, forestry, mining and utilities combined
    In an April 1 column in The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Moore writes: "If you want to understand better why so many states — from New York to Wisconsin to California — are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy, consider this depressing statistic: Today in America there are nearly twice as many people working for the government (22.5 million) than in all of manufacturing (11.5 million). This is an almost exact reversal of the situation in 1960, when there were 15 million workers in manufacturing and 8.7 million collecting a paycheck from the government.
  • Pinwheels planted in remembrance of child abuse victims
    The lawn of the Highland County Courthouse was "planted" with 350 pinwheels Friday afternoon in commemoration of Child Abuse Prevention Month. 
    Each pinwheel represents a case of child abuse or neglect in Highland County during 2010. This year's pinwheels number nearly 100 more than last  year's 266, a sign that instances child abuse are on the rise in Highland County.

    Linda Allen, president of the Highland County Board of DD, said that this is not about the Board of DD not wanting to work with Highco, rather it’s about exploring possibilities that will be there to benefit both groups, and the people they serve, as well as the taxpayers who fund the programs.
  • 39th Annual Rotary Telethon raises $120,000 WATCH THE VIDEO
    The 39th annual Rotary telethon has collected $120,000 to go toward "people helping people" at the Highland County Society for Children and Adults.
    Despite Highland County's economic difficulties, double-digit unemployment and personal financial hardships, area residents poured in dollars Wednesday night. Throughout the night, donors and organizers said supporting the society is a part of hometown pride, because 100 percent of the funds stay in Highland County.
  • SB 5 passes, signed by governor
    Senate Bill 5 was passed in House Wednesday, 53-44, after hours of debate over the controversial bill that seeks to limit collective bargaining or public employees.
     The Republican-introduced has been signed by Gov. John Kasich.

     Ohio 86th District Rep. Cliff Rosenberger (R-Clarksville) told The Highland County Press he voted for the bill.
  • Townships meet with legal counsel UPDATED
    Many township trustees met with Highland County Prosecutor Jim Grandey Wednesday night at the Liberty Township building to discuss legal options regarding the city of Hillsboro's recent notice that EMS services would be canceled as of June 30.
  • 39th annual telethon collects $120,000
    The 39th annual Rotary telethon has collected $120,000 to go towards "people helping people" at the Highland County Society for Children and Adults.
    The event was once again be hosted by Ernie Blankenship, along with the assistance of Sheriff Ron Ward, Judge Rocky Coss, and other Rotarians. The Hillsboro telethon was be held from 6-10 p.m. at U.S. Bank.
