One quick route that leads toward gainful employment is via Southern State Community College’s Truck Driving Academy (TDA). In just four weeks (or eight weekends), students can earn a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and gear up for a new career.

Southern State student Kayla Bradshaw, of Clinton County, is one of 25 women in Ohio to recently be awarded an Intel Semiconductor Scholarship, a scholarship established by Intel Corporation. Of these 25 scholarship recipients, only eight were selected to visit the Intel Semiconductor Facility in Phoenix, Ariz. for a hands-on experience. Bradshaw was one of the eight students selected to attend.

Students enrolled, or planning to enroll, at Southern State Community College for summer and/or fall semester can benefit from various financial resources to help offset the cost of a college education.

With April being recognized as Community College Month, Highland County commissioners David Daniels, Brad Roades and Terry Britton heard from Southern State Community College president Dr. Nicole Roades at their April 10 meeting. 

Southern State Community College will hold its 48th commencement ceremony Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the Patriot Center on the Central Campus in Hillsboro.

Do you need help paying for college or specific training? Have you ever been in foster or kinship care? Southern State offers a Foster Short-Term Certificate Program that provides grant funding to assist with education and training expenses associated with college.

Southern State is happy to announce its recent donation of gently used books in a variety of genres to local organizations. This initiative is part of the College’s ongoing commitment to supporting literacy and education among individuals of all ages while fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

Southern State Community College’s summer semester begins May 20, and the fall semester begins Aug. 26. Registration is currently underway. 

Southern State Community College will be offering a new training opportunity beginning in April. The Court Officer Basic Training Program, to be held at the Greenfield Workforce Development Center, 1300 Jefferson Street in Greenfield, kicks off April 23. 

The Theatre Department at Southern State Community College presents “Firebringer,” with music and lyrics by Meredith Stepien and Mark Swiderski, book by Matt Lang, Nick Lang and Brian Holden, and arranged by Clark Baxtresser and Pierce Siebers, playing April 12-14 in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Southern State’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee begins at 3:30 p.m.

Southern State’s Associate of Applied Business degree with an agriculture concentration is slated to begin in August. This initiative has been designed with local high schools that offer an agriculture program aligned with College Credit Plus. Students who may be interested in this pathway are encouraged to start planning now.

Nursing and allied health students at Southern State Community College could reap the benefits from the myriad scholarship opportunities offered through the SSCC Foundation, a tax-exempt organization founded in 1996.

Southern State will host a series of professional development courses open to the public. The first session begins Feb. 28, 2024, and registration is required.
