As graduation approaches this May, Logan Savage, a dedicated student in the theatre program at Southern State, is preparing to take the next step toward her future after earning her Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in theatre. Her journey highlights the college’s supportive environment, engaged faculty, and the meaningful opportunities available to students both inside and outside the classroom.
Savage chose Southern State for its strong theatre program, the opportunity to study under theatre professor Rainee Angles, and the college’s affordable tuition rate.
“I wanted to receive a quality education without acquiring a large amount of debt,” she said, noting that the combination of academic excellence and financial accessibility made Southern State the right fit.
During her time at Southern State, Savage became deeply involved in campus life, particularly through the SSCC Theatre Company. She credits the college’s close-knit community and welcoming atmosphere as key factors in her personal and academic growth.
“Being a student at Southern State has such a close-knit feel,” Savage shared. “I’ve built incredible friendships and found a second family within the theatre department.”
Savage also praised the college’s faculty and staff for their commitment to student success. She describes her professors as approachable and genuinely invested in each student, fostering an environment where individuals feel valued and supported.
“It says a lot when staff members know you by name and take the time to check in,” she said. “You can tell everyone wants students to thrive here.”
Through her involvement in the college’s theatre productions, Savage has performed in multiple roles, gaining hands-on experience and developing her passion for the performing arts. She emphasized that the encouragement and support from faculty—including college leadership who regularly attend performances—help students feel recognized and appreciated.
In addition to her theatre work, Savage is an active member and officer in the college’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society. Her participation provides leadership experience, professional development and significant scholarship opportunities that will support her future goals.
“PTK has been incredibly impactful,” she said. “It has helped me grow professionally and provided financial support I wouldn’t have otherwise received.”
Savage strongly encourages prospective students to consider Southern State. “When you get involved and put in the effort, you don’t feel like just a student — you feel like part of a thriving community,” she said. “I’ve made lifelong memories, formed lasting friendships and grown tremendously as a person.”
As she looks ahead to the future, Savage reflects on her time at Southern State with gratitude. “This experience has truly shaped my life for the better,” she said. “I will always hold a special place in my heart for Southern State.”
