Lions win district first-round game over Portsmouth Clay

The Fairfield Lions began their Division V SE District Tournament with a first-round win on Monday night by defeating the Portsmouth Clay Panthers by a 2-1 score at FHS.

No. 16 seeded Fairfield gained the win over the No. 17 seeded Portsmouth Clay team with goals from freshman Noah Eldridge and senior Logan McIntosh. Both goals were scored in the first half.

Assists were gained by freshman Logan Burgess and McIntosh, as Burgess assisted McIntosh’s goal, and McIntosh had the assist on the goal by Eldridge.

At goal for the Lions, senior keeper Zane Matthews finished with five saves.

The Panthers’ goal was scored in the first half.

In all, the Lions took 18 shots, with 12 shots on goal.

Next for the Lions is a district quarterfinal game on Thursday, Oct. 17 on the road at No. 1 seeded Minford with a 6 p.m. start.

The win by the Lions improves them to 5-13-0 overall this season. The Panthers finish their season at 3-11-1 overall.
