While the five-year forecast is a twice-yearly mandate from the state for school districts, the one coming before the Greenfield Exempted Village School District Board of Education at its November meeting Monday also came with a presentation.
District treasurer Brad Barber presented the five-year forecast to board members for approval, but went a step further by also presenting information on the purpose of the forecast and what goes into it.
In that presentation, Barber said the two forecasts, which only look at the general fund, required each year are May and November, with the latter one being the “main” one and the one in May being the “update.”
The forecasts, he said, are a “snapshot of what we know today.” They serve as a source of engaging the community and school district in discussions about long-range plans, they are a method for the state to gauge if it needs to become involved or not in a school district’s finances, and they help the district to look at revenue and expenditures and have a plan.
The five-year forecast approved by board members on Nov. 18 showed the following projected year-end balances: 2025 - $12.68 million, 2026 - $12.84 million, 2027 - $11.76 million, 2028 - $9.43 million and 2029 - $5.77 million.
As reported previously, the projections are based on many different variables, like the state budget and income taxes. As those variables become known, the projections are modified accordingly.
In other meeting business, middle school principal Jason Potts and assistant principal Jeremey Andrews provided board members with some brief updates on the middle school, which included the success of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) program, the steady uptick of the attendance percentage over the last few years and data points highlighting growth and achievement.
Athletic director Tim Bolender provided an update to board members that included a recap of fall sports, a preview of winter sports — all of which will soon be underway — and some updates on a couple facility repairs and improvements.
Bolender also spoke about the large drop-down flag for the new gym, which was made possible through donation from VFW Post #4736. He said VFW will be recognized for its generosity during the first boys home game on Dec. 3, which will also be Military Appreciation Night where active military personnel and veterans get into the game for free. Also, Tiger Youth Basketball Organization (TYBO) basketball will be happening during the halftimes, Bolender said.
Another event on Dec. 13, Bolender said, when the Tigers host Washington will see the return of the Greenfield Rotary Club’s spaghetti dinner. The evening will also serve as a celebration of the 50th birthday of the new gym, he said.
Student advisory council member Brooklyn Baldwin, along with superintendent Quincey Gray, presented on information gathered during a recent survey of high school students regarding the new cell phone policy adopted this year, a mandate statewide. More than 330 students responded and with a wide range of reasons for supporting or not supporting the policy. Gray said that sometime soon parents and teachers will also be polled regarding the policy. All of this information, both from students and the adults, will inform any tweaks to the policy in the future.
