    Trial begins in endangering children case

    A trial began Tuesday in Highland County Common Pleas Court for a Hillsboro man charged with one count of second-degree felony child endangering.

    Gregory Kiley, 34, was indicted on the charge in February, stemming from an  incident that allegedly occurred on April 24, 2010 at the park at the old school in Belfast.

    New section of pending firefighter contract requires city maintain staffing levels, even if run load decreases
    As contract negotiations continue between the city of Hillsboro and union representatives for Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, one particular portion of the contract has become a point of contention for city administrators.
      Hillsboro Auditor Gary Lewis says that a new section of the pending contract that requires a minimum of 12 union firefighter/paramedics on staff - even if there is a decline in responses - takes away management power, which in turn could prevent the city from acting fiscally responsible to the taxpayers.

    HFR says weekend John Street fires 'suspicious'
    Hillsboro Fire and Rescue has determined that two weekend fires in the 200 Block of John Street are "suspicious" and remain under investigation.

    Hillsboro resident wants answers on sewer increase, data reporting WATCH THE VIDEO
    With the Hillsboro City Council scheduled to hear the second reading on a resolution that would increase sewer rates by 15 percent over three years, an area resident spoke out, saying that she needed more answers on what was being done with the money.
      Armed with state statistics, grant resources, and comparisons to other cities, Christine Kerley told council during their regular meeting Monday that based on statistical data, in 2010 the average family will pay more in water and sewer services than they will pay in city taxes, and those utilities average to 1.9 percent of the medial annual household income.

    Committees discuss staffing at HFR, HPD
    With the number of emergency runs facing firefighters and EMTs at Hillsboro Fire and Rescue, Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink said the staffing numbers are too low, and the city needs to seriously consider hiring more personnel before the situation becomes dangerous for Hillsboro residents. Members of the Hillsboro City Council said that since the administration is in charge of "the hiring and the firing" then they need to staff what is in their budget.

    SSCC's Patri-Tots repeats 100-percent compliance rating
    The Patri-Tots Learning Center at Southern State Community College in Wilmington has once again received a 100-percent compliance rating on its state licensing inspection. This is the third perfect rating in the past two years, with the previous ones being February 2010 and January 2011.

    Hillsboro an earthquake monitoring site for USGS
    The city of Hillsboro is now a data collection point for seismic activity.
      The U.S. Geological Survey recently installed seismic monitors in a handful of small cities across the U.S., including Salem, Ill., Bedford, Ind., Doniphan, Mo., and Hillsboro.

    Former director of Highland County Children Services, Wendy Jacobs, has been placed on administrative leave.
     Debbie Robbins, Director of the offices of Highland County Children Services and Job and Family Services,  told The Highland County Press Monday that Jacobs was placed on administrative leave on Aug. 3.

    SEALs from unit that took down bin Laden among dead in helicopter crash
    KABUL, Afghanistan - U.S. Navy SEALs who belonged to the unit that killed Osama bin Laden are among the 30 U.S. citizens who were killed Saturday when an insurgent shot down a U.S. military helicopter.
     According to The Associated Press, "Insurgents shot down a U.S. military helicopter during fighting in eastern Afghanistan, killing 30 Americans, most of them belonging to the same elite unit as the Navy SEALs who killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, U.S. officials said today. It was the deadliest single loss for American forces in the decade-old war against the Taliban."

    Patton gets 6 years for armed robbery; smiles at victim in court
    A Hillsboro man charged with robbing Larry's Party Shop at knifepoint pleaded guilty to the first-degree felony charge Thursday and was sentenced to six years in prison, but not before turning to the victim and smiling in open court. 
    Casey Patton, 26, was indicted on the charge in June after he had allegedly entered the store on April 20, brandished a knife and demanded cash. 
    In court Thursday, before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss, as Patton was being seated at the defense table, he turned to a reporter with the Highland County Press and posed and smiled for a photo, before smiling at the victim.
