In July 1968, Washington Court House City Schools announced that a new basketball coach had been employed; 24-year-old Gary Shaffer, of Wellsburg, W.Va., replaced Jim Wilson, who retired. Shaffer had played three years of varsity basketball at West Virginia University and had coached one year at Easton, Md., where his team won the class B state championship, with a 23- 0 record. He was married and had a 14 month-old son.

With five high schools in the county, I often wonder about each school’s nickname and think about how they got the nickname. In Highland County we have the Indians, Mustangs, Tigers, Lions and Wildcats. Highland County has a nice mixture of cats, horses and a celebrated group of people.

Greenfield's Danté Jackson netted a season-high 14 points as the Musketeers upended Charlotte, 86-74, Wednesday night at the Cintas Center. Jackson also dished out six assists for Chris Mack's men.

The Blue Lions defeated the Tigers 71-6 and the Indians by a score of 54-19. Hillsboro won the final match of the meet by defeating Highland County rival McClain 66-4.

Hillsboro senior Shelby Coyle lifted the Hillsboro Lady Indians to their first victory of the season as she drove into the lane and sank the game-winner, as the Lady Indians defeated South Central Ohio League for London 46-45 Tuesday night at Hillsboro High School.

The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs lost a Southern Hills League boys basketball matchup to rival Eastern Brown, 77-51 Tuesday night.

The final three-quarter effort by the Hillsboro Indians wasn’t enough to recover from a dreadful opening eight minutes, as they were defeated by the Wilmington Hurricane 76-55 Tuesday evening.

Everything went the way of the Washington Lady Blue Lions Tuesday evening as they controlled the offensive and defensive side of the court, soundly defeating South Central Ohio League foe McClain 52-32.
