Lady Warriors invade LC; take home SHL win

DODSONVILLE — It wasn't the night of the Lady Mustangs Thursday at Lynchburg-Clay High School. In fact, the night belonged to the Eastern Brown Lady Warriors as they continued to be one of the top teams of the Southern Hills League with a 52-40 victory over LC.
LC (1-2, 3-2) put together a solid first half but trailed after eight minutes, 14-12, to the Lady Warriors. LC bounced back in the second quarter with another 12 points to take a 24-22 lead into the locker room.
Then in the second half, LC scored just 16 points, eight in each quarter, as their defense allowed EB (2-1, 3-2) to gain 30 points in the same span, including 20 points in the final frame.
This is the second loss for LC in SHL play. On Tuesday, the Lady Mustangs easily defeated the West Union Lady Dragons, but on Thursday, they committed 21 turnovers.
Lillian Blankenship and Laney Lewis each led LC with 13 points. Blankenship was 5-of-13 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 at the free-throw line. The senior tallied five steals and two assists.
Lewis was 6-of-10 shooting and 1-of-2 at the line. Lewis, a sophomore post player, had seven rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Junior Brooke Hertlein finished with eight points, seven rebounds and one assist for LC. Senior Meredith Fittro scored six points.
Karen Hilt, a junior, grabbed one rebound, and senior Hannah Blankenship had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
The loss drops the Lady Mustangs to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the SHL.
LC, the defending Division I champion of the SHL, will play again on Monday, Dec. 13 against undefeated (3-0, 5-0) the current SHL Division I leader Ripley at RHS.
