Predicting sports for 2011

Happy New Year. With this being my first column of 2011, I thought it would be the perfect time to look into the Highland County Press crystal ball (actually, it is just an empty candy bowl) to make predictions for the 2011 sports year.
SCOL Sports History: Van Matre takes helm of McClain basketball
Arnold Sutter was the new head coach at Wilmington. Sutter, who hailed from northern Ohio, had most recently been JV coach at Sycamore in the Cincinnati area. At McClain, Ted Downing had departed and had been replaced by a young fellow named Rick Van Matre. Van Matre was from the Middleport/Pomeroy area and had been an assistant coach at Gallia Academy under legendary mentor Jim Osborne.
Happy New Year's resolutions
Simply put, there are anticipated expectations of journeymen newspaper columnists to put these annual resolutions on paper (or online). And it’s pretty much been that way since Gutenberg and moveable type. In the past two decades, I’ve penned more New Year’s resolutions columns than I can recall. The one thing I do remember is this: For each and every resolution I’ve ever made, I’ve broken all of them and 10 others I thought about making.

Edwin H. MacDowell, 89, of Greenfield, died Tuesday evening, Dec. 28, 2010 at the Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe.
Mustangs dominate New Boston; gain 2nd win of season
The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs showed exactly how high-powered their offense is capable of being Wednesday in the night cap of the Wilkin Scholarship Tournament at LCHS. LC powered their way to their season-high in scoring, defeating Glenwood New Boston, 75-45.

The Whiteoak Wildcats were unable to hold onto a fourth quarter lead Wednesday night against the Paint Valley Bearcats. PV outscored the Wildcats 20-10 in the final frame for a 56-50 victory over WHS, in the Wilkin Scholarship Tournament at Lynchburg-Clay High School.
