Mustangs dominate New Boston; gain 2nd win of season

DODSONVILLE — The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs showed exactly how high-powered their offense is capable of being Wednesday in the night cap of the Wilkin Scholarship Tournament at LCHS. LC powered their way to their season-high in scoring, defeating Glenwood New Boston, 75-45.
The win advances the Mustangs to the championship game against Paint Valley Thursday at 8 p.m. at LCHS. The victory over New Boston puts the Mustangs at 2-6 overall, with their first win coming against Fayetteville earlier in the season.
"Our goal was to shoot the ball better going into this game, and we did that," LC head coach Jason McLaughlin said. "We had some open looks at the basket, and the shots went in."
In the first quarter and into the early stages of the second, New Boston got within three points of tying the game with 6:40 left in the first half. Then the Mustangs went on a tear, outscoring their opponent 9-2 in the next three minutes for a 29-19 lead. During that span, Austin Fawley scored seven points, including two 3-pointers.
After leading 18-13 to end the first quarter, the Mustangs (2-6) led 44-24 at halftime.
During the 44-point first half by LC, Dallas Puckett scored 13 points, with 11 points in the first quarter. He started the game with a 3-pointer. Puckett, a senior, finished with 18 points.
Also having a productive first half was Austin Fawley and Steven Collins. Fawley made four of his six 3-pointers in the first half. In the second quarter he sank three shots from beyond the arc, finishing the game with the scoring high of 23 points. Collins had six points in the second quarter.
With the lead well in hand to start the third quarter, LC added 12 points to their total in the ensuing eight minutes, while holding New Boston to eight in the same frame for a 56-32 advantage. Scoring in the third were Puckett, Fawley and Dylan Noll. Noll finished with 10 points.
In the last quarter, LC scored 17 points, with Puckett, Tyler Davidson, Shain Gragg, Wes Pierson, Fawley, Noll and Collins all contributing to the scoring.
"Tyler (Davidson) had 10 assists, maybe more, and that has been something we've been looking for all year," McLaughlin said. "(Wednesday) was about the team and that is the type of play we need.
"We are an up-and-down team and we are trying to figure out how to be consistent."
LC was 6-of-11 from the free-throw line.
As for New Boston, they were led in scoring by Levi Horsles with 12 points, all tallied in the first half. Horsles scored eight points in the first quarter.
Shane Buckley scored nine and Trey Branham had seven points for New Boston.
Both teams will be back in action Thursday at LC. New Boston will face the Whiteoak Wildcats in the consolation game at 6 p.m. LC will play in the championship game at 8 p.m., taking on Paint Valley.
