  • State, local crews continue road-clearing efforts

    With as much as 17 inches of snow having fallen over the past 24 hours on highways in parts of Ohio, crews with the Ohio Department of Transportation are working through the weekend to keep road and bridges safe and passable. Throughout the weekend, nearly 1,300 ODOT snowplows and vehicles have been combating ice and snow across the state - targeting interstates, U.S. and state routes, ramps and bridges.
  • Many roadways remain snow-covered
    While routes on the state highway system are open and passable, they are completely snow covered in the northern region of the district - such as in Highland, Ross, Pike and Jackson counties - where they have they have received a much greater accumulation of snow.
  • ODOT treating roadways; urges caution
    ODOT District 9 crews will continue battling tonight's winter storm; however, motorists are advised of the need for extreme caution.

    Former Fairfield High School girls basketball coach Kevin Fouch died at age 55 Friday, February 5, 2010 at his residence.
  • Due date extended for Highland County real estate, mobile home taxes
    Highland County Treasurer Vickie L. Warnock has announced that the first-half due date for Highland County real estate and mobile home taxes has been extended to Friday, March 12, 2010.
  • New playground under way - shelter house coming soon
    The Village of Lynchburg partnered with the Lynchburg Area Recreational Committee, in 2009, to apply for a nature works grant that would allow the community to receive funding for a playground. Lynchburg was awarded the ODNR grant in the amount of $23,515. The proposed site has been prepared for excavation and the Playground Equipment is on its way. The proposed completion is April, and the project is on schedule.
  • Court security, COOP addressed
    Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss updated commissioners Wednesday on a recent security report on the Highland County Courthouse.
  • Daniels files petitions as Ohio Senate candidate
    State Representative David Daniels has formally filed his petitions for candidacy for the 17th Senate District at the Ross County Board of Elections.  David is running to serve in the seat currently held by Senator John Carey (R-Wellston) who cannot run for re-election due to term limits.
  • Winter storm warning leads to school delays
    A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, as a heavy band of snow, sleet and rain moves through the Ohio Valley. The forecast calls for 3 to 5 inches of snow for Highland County. Heavier amounts are predicted to the north and east.

  • Ohio Veterans homes fully comply with all VA standards
    The Ohio Department of Veterans Services Veterans' Homes in Sandusky and Georgetown are in full compliance with all 158 medical and other standards rated by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  The VA's recently completed survey carefully examined the homes in Erie and Brown Counties for quality of medical care of the residents, patient rights, management practices and safety.
  • Ohio Farm Bureau responds to HSUS Power Grab
    Out-of-state activists have begun their efforts to undo Ohioans’ overwhelming passage of Issue 2. Less than three months after Ohioans approved Issue 2 to create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (OLCSB), lobbyists from Washington, D.C. have declared they know better than Ohio voters, according to John C. (Jack) Fisher, executive vice president of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation (OFBF).

    A Newman Road man has been charged with the illegal possession of a firearm after an investigation at his 4071 Newman Road residence Sunday.
