Editor and Publisher has reported that the sale of bankrupt Brown Publishing, which operates The Times-Gazette and County Shopper in Hillsboro, appears imminent.

The Advisory Committee for OSU Extension – Highland County will be hosting an informational meeting at the Highland County Fair concerning future operational plans for the Extension office. This meeting will take place on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 starting at 5:15 p.m. at the Livestock Show Arena before the Junior Fair Market Hog and Market Goat sales.

Auditor of State Mary Taylor has announced a fiscal emergency in the village of Bethel in Clermont County. The determination was made as a result of a fiscal analysis conducted by the Auditor of State's Local Government Services section. Village Mayor James Dick requested the fiscal analysis.

A particularly busy outdoor marijuana eradication season continues to unfold, according to Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray and his office's Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI). The first six weeks of BCI's Outdoor Marijuana Eradication program has now yielded more than 50,000 marijuana plants seized - more than was recovered in Ohio in all of 2009.

Longtime Cincinnati businessman and civic leader William C. "Bill" Portman has died at his home. He was 88. The Associated Press reported this week that in a statement released through his son, Rob Portman's U.S. Senate campaign, Portman's family says he died Tuesday of natural causes.

After lifetimes of dedication in service to others, and to the betterment of their communities, four area women were lauded for their work with their inductions into the Highland County Women's Hall of Fame.
 The induction banquet was held Tuesday at the Patriot Center on the Southern State Community College Campus in Hillsboro.

They held their positions in the poised formation of law enforcement officers, but they could not hold back their tears as a man hailed as the very embodiment of an officer of the law was given his "last call for service."

With more than a dozen K9 dogs and officers lining the entrance to the Hillsboro Cemetery, hundreds of law enforcement personnel from across three states laid to rest an exemplary officer whose work and passion made Highland County a better place to live.

Fran DeWine, the wife of former U.S. Senator and current Ohio Attorney General candidate Mike DeWine, will be in Highland County Wednesday, Sept. 1.

As "Amazing Grace" was played on the bagpipes, more than 100 law enforcement officers in uniform - each clutching a single white carnation - paid tribute to a fallen brother in arms. 

The local Fraternal Order of Police held a memorial service Monday evening at the Hillsboro Church of Christ in honor of Lt. Randy Reffit, the jail administrator with the Highland County Sheriff's Office who died Thursday of complications from heart surgery and a stroke.And again on Tuesday, hundreds of family, friends, and co-workers paid their respects at the Hillsboro Church of Christ. 

Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss found Greenfield resident Jim Blaine to be "technically in violation" of the terms of his house arrest, but Coss chose not to send Blaine back to jail after he went to the home of one of his "congregants" following the death of a family member.

Earlier this month, Blaine pleaded guilty to one count of forgery, a felony of the fifth degree, and aggravated theft, a felony of the third degree. The theft charge alleged that Blaine had stolen more than $100,000 from the Good Shepherd Church in Greenfield.
