    Deer-archery season opens statewide

    Approximately 345,000 bowhunters, representing more than half of all Ohioans who hunt deer, are expected to participate in the statewide archery deer hunting season that opened September 24, according the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

    New Ohio law for ambulance staffing takes effect
    The bill revises the requirements for staffing ambulances. The new requirements vary, depending on whether the ambulance is traveling to the emergency scene or from the emergency scene and carrying a patient, and whether the emergency medical service is a volunteer organization or is substantially utilizing volunteers. Previously, Ohio law prevented ambulances from leaving their departments until they were staffed with at least two EMTs.

    Highway Patrol to set up OVI checkpoints in Hillsboro, Wilmington Saturday, Sept. 24
    The Ohio State Highway Patrol has announced that it will conduct an OVI (Operating a Vehicle Impaired) checkpoint in Hillsboro on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 24 along a section of North High Street (U.S. 62).

    Faculty begin strike at Cincinnati State
    Faculty at Cincinnati State Technical & Community College began picketing Friday after the college board and faculty union could not reach a settlement on contracts that faculty members say would have them working 20 percent more hours than their counterparts at other Ohio community colleges.

    Veterans group to honor Highland County's last surviving soldier in Civil War
    A Chillicothe veterans organization will be honoring the grave sight of the last surviving Highland County veteran of the Civil War. 
    Michael Austin Garrett, the last surviving Highland County Union Civil War Veteran died May 23, 1945. Garrett served in Company A of the 175th Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

    Radio great Chuck Collier dies at age 64
    A New Vienna native whose voice was a staple on radio waves for nearly 50 years has died. WEWS News 5 in Cleveland is reporting that Chuck Collier, "the voice of WGAR" has died of a heart attack. He was 64 years old.

    Board of DD votes to terminate superintendent's employment; action not effective immediately WATCH THE VIDEO
    After more than two and a half hours in executive session, the Highland County Board of Developmental Disabilities voted 6-0 Thursday evening to pass a resolution to terminate the employment of Hills and Dales Superintendent Chuck Biggert. However, the termination is not immediate, and a pre-disciplinary conference has been scheduled for Biggert to address the board.
     A reason for the action to terminate was not given.

    Conciliator rules in favor of HCSO; department may consider layoffs
    The conciliator in binding arbitration has ruled in favor of raises for employees with the Highland County Sheriff's Office. However, the county maintains it does not have additional funds to appropriate to the office, and raises for some could result in layoffs for approximately 20 percent of HCSO staff if the contract is finalized.

    Ohio Senate approves redistricting map
    The Ohio Senate voted 24-7 Wednesday to approve a bill that puts Highland County in the 15th Congressional district.
    The proposed district plan places Highland County in the southwest corner of a horseshoe-shaped district. Other than a portion of Ross County to the east, all of Highland County's neighboring counties are in other districts in this proposal. Fayette County would be a part of the 10th District, while Clinton, Brown, Adams, Pike and a portion of Ross counties would be part of the Second District.

    Two individuals are being sought by the Mowrystown Police Department after they fled the scene of a car crash following a pursuit in southern Highland County that exceeded speeds of 100 mph in an allegedly stolen vehicle.

    Paint Creek fire district proposes EMS fee for outside calls
    The Paint Creek Joint Fire and EMS District is considering charging for EMS runs not within the district, as the increased amount of squad runs is putting a financial strain on the district. A rate will be proposed before the end of the year, according to a district trustee.

    A part of an alleged criminal enterprise involving the cultivating and cloning of marijuana plants was discovered in a Washington Township home Tuesday, following the execution of nine search warrants across southwest Ohio.
      According to Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward, detectives with the HCSO, U.S. 23 Major Crimes Task Force, the Centerville Police Department and the Germantown Police Department executed a search warrant on Sweeney Lane in Washington Township in Highland County Tuesday. The search warrant was the result of a nine-month-long investigation by several agencies, headed by the Moraine Police Department in Montgomery County into concerns a major growing operation was under way involving several different individuals across several counties.
