Three Highland County teams competed this week in the Division II Southeast District bowling tournament, with Lynchburg-Clay’s boys and girls varsity teams both winning the district and earning a trip to the Div. II State Bowling Tournament.

Highland County had 10 boys basketball players named to the 2023-24 District 14 Coaches Association All-District teams, including two first-team honorees and a co-Player of the Year.

Highland County had 14 individuals earning 2023-24 District 14 Coaches Association All-District girls basketball honors, including two first-team selections and an Assistant Coach of the Year, as announced Tuesday.

If there was one thing that could be said about the 2023-24 Fairfield Lady Lions — as head coach Jennifer Blue stated — it was the girls team never quit, and they showed improvement throughout the season.

Losing their halftime lead when the third quarter had closed, the No. 21 seeded Fairfield Lady Lions had a speed bump in the first of two second-half quarters, entering the final eight minutes of their Division III SE District Sectional Semifinal game against the No. 28 seeded Westfall Lady Mustangs trailing by seven points, instead of holding a three-point lead. 

The Fairfield Lions got back on track on Friday night. Following a four-game span where they lost three of four, the Lions went back on the road — staying in Highland County — and returned to Leesburg with their 18th win of the season, defeating the Whiteoak Wildcats, 58-28.

The Southeast District of the OHSAA announced Sunday afternoon the 2024 sectional/district brackets for boys basketball teams. 

Thursday night saw the Fairfield Lady Lions play with one of their best efforts against the reigning Southern Hills Athletic Conference Division II champions. 

The Fairfield Lions boys basketball team has lost their past two games in a span of five days, as they fell on Friday (Feb. 2) to the Fayetteville Rockets, and on Tuesday (Feb. 6) against the Miami Trace Panthers, as both games took place at Grandle Gymnasium in Leesburg. 

Double-figure scoring games by Fairfield’s Kelsey Clark, Faith Donley and Isabelle Hale were big factors in the Lady Lions winning Monday night at Miami Trace High School, as FHS defeated the host Lady Panthers, 55-43.
