Whiteoak Wildcats win over Zane Trace; drop game to Adena

Monday evening (May 8) saw the Whiteoak Wildcats continue to add to their overall win total for the 2023 season, as they defeated the Zane Trace Pioneers of the Scioto Valley Conference by a 5-4 score at WHS.

The Division IV No. 1 state-ranked Wildcats gained their 22nd win of the season with a two-run first inning, followed by a one-run bottom of the third for a 3-0 lead. Zane Trace scored two runs in the top of the fifth and took the lead with another two-run inning in the sixth.

The Wildcats rallied for a walk-off win with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

WHS finished the game with 11 hits and one error, while the Pioneers had eight hits and two errors.

Nate Price and Luken Roades each had three hits, with Price finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and a steal. Luken Roades was 3-for-4 with three runs, a double and a steal.

Landon Barnett went 2-for-4 with a run, one RBI, a double and a steal. With one hit each were Jacen Applegate (1-for-1), David Donohoo (1-for-3) and Carson Emery (1-for-2, two RBI, a walk, SAC, steal).

Ian Griffith had a walk, Kaden Moon-Stone scored a run and had a steal, and Eli Roberts walked once.

Luken Roades was the winning pitcher, pitching all eight innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and one walk. Roades totaled five strikeouts in the win.

Tuesday (May 9) saw Whiteoak suffer just their second loss of the 2023 season, falling to the Adena Warriors, 12-7 at WHS.

Both teams scored a run in the first inning, but Adena added two runs in the top of the third and three runs in the fourth for a 6-1 lead. WHS answered with a four-run fifth inning for a 6-5 deficit.

In the sixth, Adena added one run for a two-run lead at 7-5, but Whiteoak tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-7 score. Adena regained the lead and the win with five runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Adena totaled 15 hits and committed one error, while Whiteoak had seven hits and four errors.

Landon Barnett finished 2-for-3 with one run, two RBI, a double and three steals for Whiteoak. Nate Price went 2-for-4 with one run, five RBI and a home run.

Zander Roades was 2-for-3 with two runs. Also for the Wildcats, David Donohoo drew a walk, Carson Emery scored a run, walked twice and had a steal. Ian Griffith walked once, and Luken Roades scored two runs while also adding a walk and a steal.

Eli Roberts finished 1-for-3 with a double.

Griffith also pitched 0.2 innings, where he allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks with one strikeout. Moon-Stone pitched six innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits and no walks with five strikeouts. Roberts pitched 0.1 innings, allowing no hits, runs or walks.

The previous two games leave WHS at 22-2 overall this season.
