Hillsboro starts season with 2 wins at Queen of the Hill Classic

The Hillsboro Lady Indians began the 2025 season with two consecutive wins on Saturday, defeating both Portsmouth West and Symmes Valley at the Queen of the Hill Classic at Rock Hill High School.
In their season opener, Hillsboro defeated the Portsmouth West Lady Senators, 10-0 in five innings, behind an offensive performance that included six hits.
HHS scored three runs in the bottom of the first, followed by a three-run second inning, and they added four runs in the bottom of the third for a 10-0 lead.
HHS in the bottom of the first saw Chloe Roberts gain the first hit of the season with a full-count triple on a line drive to right field. She scored Hillsboro’s first run of the season off a single to left field off the bat of Camryn Spruell on a 2-0 count for the one-run lead.
Spruell stole second base, and with two outs, she scored on an infield error by PWHS as Addie Huff took first on the infield error, eventually standing on second base.
With a 2-0 lead, Huff scored off a single to right field by Isabelle Brunck for the three-run lead.
In the bottom of the second, Hillsboro had both Rhianna Clemons and Reagan Clemons take base off a single by Rhianna and a hit by pitch taken by Reagan. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch, and with one out, both Clemons sisters scored off a three-run home run from Roberts, putting Hillsboro ahead with a 6-0 lead.
Hillsboro scored their final four runs in the bottom of the third for a 10-run advantage starting with Huff reaching first base safely on an error by PWHS. Brunck followed with a walk, and both runners scored on a ground out to the pitcher by Madison Dearmon, followed with an errant throw in the infield by the first baseman.
Rhianna Clemons reached on an infield error, eventually standing at second base via the error. Reagan Clemons followed with a SAC bunt to the pitcher, moving Rhianna Clemons to third base for the second out of the inning. Mary Dietrick took first base with a walk, and both Clemons and Dietrick scored off a two-out single to left field from Roberts for a 10-0 lead.
Roberts led Hillsboro with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, collecting two runs and five RBI as two of her hits were a triple and home run, totaling eight bases for the game.
Spruell finished 1-for-2 with one run one RBI and a walk. She also collected a steal.
Brunck finished 1-for-2 with a run, RBI and a walk. Rhianna Clemons ended the game at 1-for-2 with two runs.
HHS also had Dietrick finish with a run and a walk, Huff scored two runs, Dearmon had a walk, and Reagan Clemons scored one run in the win. Also in the game Huff had a steal, and also with a steal was Rilynn Swisshelm.
In the circle, Spruell earned the win, pitching five innings consisting of 70 pitches, 43 for strikes. Spruell also allowed no runs on one hit and two walks, while ending the game with 12 strikeouts.
Portsmouth West finished the game with one run and five errors, while HHS totaled six hits and no errors. PWHS had their lone hit occur to lead off the fifth inning. Spruell struck out five of the first seven batters she faced, then that streak went to eight of the first 10 batters faced.
Spruell struck out the side in the first and third innings.
In game two of the doubleheader, the Lady Indians defeated Symmes Valley, 7-2.
HHS scored two runs in the bottom of the first, one run in the fifth, and they capped their scoring with a four-run sixth inning. HHS finished the game with six hits and one error.
SVHS scored their two runs in the top of the fourth inning, as they had one hit and committed two errors.
Hillsboro began their scoring in the first inning with a lead-off walk from Dietrick, and after an out was recorded, Spruell smashed a home run for a two-run lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, HHS broke what became a 2-2 tied score with Spruell scoring a run after stealing third base and taking home as Miller reached third base on a steal.
Hillsboro’s fourth run came in the bottom of the sixth when Swisshelm scored a run on an RBI groundout by Roberts. After Spruell was intentionally walked, Miller doubled to centerfield knocking in Spruell, Reagan Clemons and Dietrick for a 7-2 lead.
Spruell was the winning pitcher, throwing seven innings for a complete game, allowing two runs (two unearned) on one hit and two walks, with 16 strikeouts. Spruell threw 117 pitches, 78 for strikes.
Miller led HHS at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 (one double) with three RBI, one walk.
Roberts finished 1-for-4 (triple) with one RBI, and Spruell went 1-for-1 (home run) with three runs, two RBI and three walks. Dearmon finished 1-for-3, and Swisshelm finished 1-for-3 with one run.
Dietrick ended the game with two walks and two runs, Isabelle Brunck also drew a walk, and Reagan Clemons had one run scored.
Steals for HHS included Spruell (two), Isabelle Brunck, Miller and Dietrick.
